Any suggestions on how to give an 8 month old juice/water in sippy cup?

We have been seeing DS reach for our glasses while we drink, and he puts his mouth on the cup. So we decided to buy a sippy cup for him, but he doesn't understand how to use it yet.

I bought apple juice to put in the cup, but since he doesn't have the hang of it, I put it in a bottle (a little watered down for him). He refuses it. It's like he knows only formula goes in his bottle.

I tried to put some juice on my finger, and he says mmmmm, but then won't drink it.

Any suggestions other than just keep trying?

I never gave my DS juice, but with water I just kept giving him the sippy cup every day. It took him a looong time to get the hang of it. I never put it in his bottle, since I wanted to start training him on the cup.

yeah... no suggestions here Chat Icon

DS loves to drink for a regular cup but refuses to learn how to use a sippy. he does like the straw munckin ones though and straw cups are actually better for them, it improves their oral motor skills.

this is the one we have:

Mighty Grip Flip Straw Cup

External Image

the best part is that it doesn't spill, ever!!

and you don't have to give him juice, just plain water is fine.

It took forever for DS to learn how to use a sippy, but I would just keep giving it to him.

I must have tried 6 different ones. ITA with LB, the straw sippies are the best and easiest for DS to learn to use.

It will take a little time, but just keep giving it to him. He'll eventually get it.

I bought the straw sippy cup (with handles he can hold), he just brings his mouth to the cup, not the cup to his mouth (which is fine). I just bought a bottle of juice to 'spark' his interest rather than just water. I guess I'll just keep giving him the cup. Maybe i'll try giving him a regular cup with a little water in it to give him the idea.

We use Nuby sippy cup with the silicone top. Or if we are out I will use a straw with my finger and she takes from that

I tried the straw and finger thing, he wanted to eat the straw lol. I think I just need to keep practicing with him.

My DD loves the straw cup and has no problem with it but isn't a fan of the sippy cup. So maybe try that?

Also, you can just put water in the cup. There's no real reason to start with juice and it's a lot of sugar/empty calories.

Thanks, I bought the straw cup, that's what I was using. I really only bought the juice to make him realize there was something tasty in there. Since he didn't drink it, I'll try water. Chat Icon

Re: Any suggestions on how to give an 8 month old juice?

Gianna is 8 months too. I started 'trying' to give her the sippy about a month ago and its a SLOW process.

I try and give her the sippy everyday while she's on her playmat in the afternoon and then while i'm cleaning up after dinner when she's in her highchair. She gets a few ounces of water with a splash of juice in it, and I would say out of the 3-4 oz she gets, she actually consumes, maybe 1!

She has finally learned how to get the liquid out, but tipping the cup back to do so has been her issue. A friend recommended giving it to her when she's in more of a reclined position so that she kind of HAS to tilt it back and learn. We will see.. that's next for her! Good Luck!

did you buy the nuby one? DS hated that b/c you basicall have to bite on the straw to get the water out. this one is good b/c it's more like a real straw which he totally gets.

Try giving your DC juice at room temp. My son hated applejuice & I couldn't understand why. Turns out, it was too cold for him.

Whoops, I just reread my post and realized it may have come across as snippy. Didn't mean it that way!

I think I didChat Icon But I did bc it has the handles, and he always holds our fingers while drinking, so that is why we bought it. I'm going to buy this one, maybe he'll get it faster. Good thinkin!

Re: Any suggestions on how to give an 8 month old juice?

DS loves to grab our cups too when we are drinking so we let him take a couple of sips of water and he seems to love it. He gets excited when he sees a Poland Spring bottle since my hubby taught him how to sip from that. We tried the sippy cup recently and the one we have they have to suck on it so he is starting to get the hang of it but would much rather grab a regular cup.

I would get the Nuby straw sippy and let him play with it, only with water first (it might leak and apple juice will get sticky if you don't realized it leaked) and one day while he is playing with it he will suck and realize something is their. You could also try with a regular straw first since it is a lot easier than the sippy straw cups. I also always watered down the juice and still do. I usually do 30% juice and the rest water.

we're starting the sippy cup thing too...

IMO, you definitely should not encourage drinking juice! It's super-sugary, and has no nutritional value. It will get your child used to overly sweet/fattening foods...

Put some formula or water in the cup.... later transition to 2% milk

I never said I am trying to encourage drinking juice which will get him used sweet/fattening foods. I said I did it so he knew something was in there. IMO, that will not get him addicted.

you're right, the juice idea was a good one! if he won't take the sippy then enticing him with juice is fine (IMO), and then later you can just do a splash of juice in water - that will do no harm Chat Icon

sorry... I didn't read the posts in the middle of the thread...

why not put formula in the cup? This is what we're trying to do. right now, this is what our DS's really recognize as 'food' anyway, KWIM? Juice would be introducing a new flavor and a new delivery method at the same time.....

I will-when I get the new sippy cup.
