Any tips on explaining surgery to a 3 year old?

Dd is having her tonsils and adenoids removed on Mon and I don't know what to tell her. I dont want to not explain.

I would explain the doctor is going to fix her throat boo boo at the hospital. Focus on the ice cream afterwards and acknowledge she might feel scared but you will be right there with her. Is she allowed to bring a lovey or stuffed animal?

Maybe a kids book will help? We like Nicky goes to the doctor but maybe there's one more about hospitals?

Yes. She can bring her favorite kitty so we are bringing that. Her ped said to tell her that we will be there the entire time and when she wakes up she may feel like she is sick.

DS's friend just had it last week. His parents basically left it that the dr was going to fix his throat so he felt better. They didn't want him to be nervous leading up to it, so the morning of they gave more explanations about how he would take a nap and when he woke up his throat would hurt a lot, but he could eat all the ices he wanted. And then each day it would hurt less and less. The first day was rough, but he'll be a week post-op tomorrow and he's doing great now.

Does the hospital have a child life department? Part of their job is to explain medical procedures to children and they're really good at what they do.

We go in at 5am and let her eat whatever she wanted today. We told her tomorrow she is going to the Dr's. We are just going to see what happens when we get there. I'm freaking out.
