Anybody ever use the kids' locker rooms at the Huntington YMCA?
Anybody ever use the kids' locker rooms at the Huntington YMCA? Do you know what the protocol is there?
Just curious as to if I was wrong in this situation.
My DH and I take the kids to swimming classes. DH handles DD (2+) and I take care of DS (9 months).
The locker room has 2 tables that are used for changing babies & little kids. At least that's what I've seen them used for as there are no changing stations in the locker room.
I went over to the table closest to me, where there was a young girl doing school work (which is fine by me, I take no issue with that.) So in order to avoid her, I went to the other end of the table. BUT at the other end of the table was a sweater and can of Coke that belonged to a young girl who was having her hair blown dry by her mother.
I laid my towel down, but didn't touch the girls stuff (it was sort of to the side) and then proceeded to change my DS. (I didn’t think it was my place to move her belongings elsewhere and since I wasn’t touching it, it was a non-issue, although I did think there might be a chance the soda would get knocked over while “wrestling” to get DS changed.) I heard the mother nastily say "Move your soda!" and then followed with "And put your sweater in the locker!" But I could tell by her tone that she was angry with me. I thanked the young girl for clearing her stuff away, but no response. They eventually left while I continued to change my son.
When we all got into the truck, I was telling my DH what transpired in the locker room. He started laughing and said “Oh, then it’s you she was b*tchin’ about!” My DH happened to be waiting for me and DS outside of the locker rooms when the woman and her daughter walked out. As she was leaving she was complaining "how disgusting that some woman came over and changed her baby while I had my stuff laid out on the table.”
There are at least 4 benches and probably over 100 lockers, of which most are not in use and today the benches were empty. In my mind, those tables are primarily used to change children, at least that’s what I see them used for (and the one girl I always seeing doing school work there.)
What baffles me is that the woman thought it was disgusting that I changed my son next to her belongings, but what does she think was on the table before I got there?!
Was I wrong? What would you guys have done? I see this woman every weekend so it will be interesting to see if she has anything to say to me the next time we’re in there.

I would assume tables in a "CHANGING room" are not for sodas and homework, seriously, people are NAKED in a changing room and it isn't really a rec room! But since I have never been there, I am not sure. I am curious what others reply.

I hate people, where would she have LIKED you to change the baby??? Geez you'd think someone with KIDS would be HELPFUL in that situation. Also the fact that the little one didn't even acknowledge your "Thank you" makes me think she's absorbing all of her mother's rudeness. You're totally in the clear here, don't even sweat it..

I agree.
I would ask the front desk where you should be changing the baby & explained what happened.
I can assure you someone's azz was on that table before homework got there.

Maybe they can put up a sign as to where to change diapers. (Which they should already have up IMHO)

ITA with the other posters.
Since they offer classes for babies and small kids, there should be some type of changing station, and it makes sense that that table would be it.
Just b/c people are dumb doesn't mean they are right

Yup and I would go so far as to offer to make one and hang it up for them and kindly point it out to the evil witch next time you are there.

Ok, thanks girls! Whew!
I started thinking that maybe I *did* do something wrong, but just couldn't see it. I guess I'll have to look around and see if they have signs posted anywhere.
