Anybody give their DC the H1N1 nasal mist? UPDATE with answer from ped
I had appts for both my DDs to get their seasonal and H1N1 vaccines tomorrow. Well, I just got a call from the ped who said they don't have the H1N1 for the baby but they do have the seasonal one for her. And for Marron, they don't have either injectable vaccine, but they do have the H1N1 nasal mist vaccine. I'm just a little concerned about giving it to her, since it is a live vaccine. Granted, it IS attenuated (weakened) but I'm just not sure; especially since she will be around the baby, who WON'T be getting the vaccine, I'm afraid of Marron passing it to the baby through simple shedding of the virus.
Experience? Opinions?

Re: Anybody give their DC the H1N1 nasal mist?
Just got it yesterday. DS is 2. We had a choice between the shot and the mist but the ped recommended the mist so we took it. So far no side effects although she did say he might have a runny nose in a couple of days.
ETA: he got the seasonal flu shot at the same time.

Re: Anybody give their DC the H1N1 nasal mist?
We have not done the H1N1 here...yet. However, my 4 year old got the seasonal flu nasal spray vaccine and she was absolutely fine afterward. No one else got sick either.
My DD's school is giving the H1N1 vaccine and I got a whole pamphlet of info regarding both types from the NYC Dept of Health. It states that "The vaccine virus is attenuated so it will not cause illness."

Re: Anybody give their DC the H1N1 nasal mist?
DS got round1 on friday. On Sunday he woke up sounding a little congested and had a stuffy nose. He still has a little bit of a stuffy nose today, and he told me once that he didnt feel good, so i gave him a little tylenol (without even taking his temp)
He usually gets fevers from shots, so as of right now I would say for us it has been no worse than a shot.

Both of mine got it Saturday early afternoon. No problems at all.
When they got the seasonal flu mist back in early Sept they both had fevers, vomiting, etc. for a day or 2 so I was expecting that again.

Thanks ladies. I guess I'll just ask my ped about the risk to the baby when I go tomorrow.

I would ask about it. I know people with compromised immune systems (and those close to them) shoudl avoid the mist if possible. I'm not sure if this applies to a baby though.

Re: Anybody give their DC the H1N1 nasal mist?
I am so with you I was not for the nasal mist at all too many precautions to consider-like who can get it based on their health situation meds... if it is that dangerous for some people like pregnant people (who are not necessarily compromised otherwise...) why am I giving it to my small child? I went with the shot which also made me nervous but DS is fine. I also considered if I was going to give him this thing that scares me at least let me do it and have it be effective-who is to say my 3 year old will inhale properly or not sneeze or blow out... I know it gets in the membranes but I want real effectiveness so I believe in the shot-just me though I know LOTS of people that went with nasal and are fine. Good luck with your decision I know it was tough for me!

I was worried about the same thing, they said the risk was pretty low that he could give it to the baby. DS who is 6 got it, and baby is just 5 months

DD got part 1 on Friday.
Just FYI, here is some good and easy reading about the two different types:

Re: Anybody give their DC the H1N1 nasal mist?
So the ped said that there is a risk of the baby getting the flu from being near Marron after getting the mist due to viral shedding. He said that I should try to keep them separated for about 5 days to keep the baby safe since she was not getting vaccinated. I told him that was impossible so we opted to wait until they get the regular vaccine in.
