Anybody know about Head Start?
My SIL and her 2 kids will be coming to live with us and I'm trying to get the info she needs to enroll her kids in school. She has a 6 year old, who will go to the grammar school in my district, but the 4 year old needs someplace to go during the day. I'm not sure if my district offers Pre-K (and how long/how much it is). They don't have alot of money, and I don't think she can afford full day daycare for him.
More than that, I really think he would benefit from Head Start (from what I remember it is about). He is 4 years old and while he does speak, it is VERY difficult to understand most of what he says. I know that he needs speech therapy, but SIL has never mentioned that she thinks he needs it, and I don't want to be the one to suggest it. I think it would be best coming from a teacher in a program that might be able to help him.
So, my questions regarding the program are: Does Head Start offer these kinds of services? What is the income level to qualify for Head Start? Where are there facilities in mid-Suffolk county?
If you have any other suggestions or recommendations for programs for him, I'd appreciate the input.

Re: Anybody know about Head Start?
Im not sure about the income level needed to qualify but I am pretty sure that if he is tested and needs speech services he will be guaranteed a speac in the program regardless of meeting the income requirements. I know that head start themselves do not provide the speech services it is provided by the school district but the speech therapy sessoins can happen during the day while he is at headstart.
here is a link to liheadstart. There is some of good information. liheadstart

Head Start itself doesn't provide speech services, but if he qualifies he can receive therapy while he's at school. I used to go to a Head Start to provide speech services for a few preschoolers.

Re: Anybody know about Head Start?
You should recommend to her that she contact the local district to schedule an evaluation and see if he qualifies for services. That way the DC can attend a more intensive program that is heavily focused on language development, etc. rather than a regular pre-school setting. It's better to get evaluated sooner than later, especially before he starts kindergarten.
Someone once told me (politely) that DS didn't speak as much as he should at age 2 and referred me to EI and I'm so happy that she was concerned enough to let me know about it!

See, how do I do this politely? I know he needs services, but I don't think the mom knows. At 4 years old, she still has to "translate" just about everything he says.
Thanks everybody for all the good info.

Explain to her that you have noticed that it's sometimes hard to understand what DC says and you heard about this great pre-school program from this great website (LIF!) that is FREE to parents and she can just call xxx number to set up an appointment. Tell her they will come to observe the child to see what type of program he would qualify for. Just hype it up like it's a really great thing KWIM?
That's what the girl did to me and honestly I'm so greatful that she did since DS needed a lot of help and the ped. just kept saying "he'll talk when he's ready", etc. I didn't even know that such a program existed before she told me and I know a lot of other parents don't know either.

Re: Anybody know about Head Start?
We just moved to San Diego.... but it's pretty much the same here as in NY.
At the school where I work now (I'm a speech pathologist).... we have a head start on our campus. We get referrals all of the time for speech/language evaluations! If you don't feel comfortable telling her to have the child evaluated, I think that the teachers in the head start program will be able to properly refer him for services.
I feel like sometimes moms think there is a certain stigma associated with speech therapy -- but there shouldn't be! You're not saying he has a disorder or a disability... he just might need a little help!
