anyone a nurse....question for you....
is it true that if you have your associates in nursing you can no longer work in NYS until you get your bachaelors? I know someone going to school & he told me that he can't work until he has his BS & that he also can't work at a position lower than a nurse since he has a degree in nursing.
wondered if that was true or is he "BSing" us.

I don't know the answer but I do know that my sister is a nurse with an associates degree and she is working. She does not have to go get her Bachelors degree.

I was going to be a nurse....YEARS ago and while in school that's what it was too. But he claims this is a new law?

Nope, not true. I have my associates in nursing and I have never heard this. I do know they are trying to make the profession an all bachelors field, but it hasn't happened yet.

My sister is a nurse with her AS from Farmingdale. It was VERY difficult for her to get a job and she wound up in a nursing home instead of hospital. She is going for her BS while working to get something different. Most schools are doing away with the AS because hospitals have stopped hiring on that level.

so maybe there is some truth to what we've been told?
What about not be able to work in a position lower than what your degree is in?

I was just talking about this with a friend at work who is a nurse. Apparently, there is talk of this happening but it's not in effect yet and who knows if it will ever go into effect. I imagine the state would have to grandfather people who got there AS many years ago. There was an article in the Times maybe last week. I know it was recent.
ETS: Nevermind about the times, I think the article was in a professional nursing magazine/newsletter. If you want I'll ask my friend for more info or a link to the article.

It's actually VERY difficult to get a job as an RN right now regardless of ASN or BSN. Most places will have "bachelor's preferred" on the job listing, but I've only seen a few that were actually required. I think a lot new grads in this economy are having trouble finding jobs and the BSN definitely gives them an edge.

It never used to be a problem years ago, but things have changed with this economy.
The job market stinks right now for everyone, but the worst is for new grads. I think if you have experience they don't care if you have an AS or a BS, but for new grads they are almost exclusively hiring BSN. Yes the job listings will say BSN preferred and not required, but when they are getting more applications than they have positions, they can afford to be picky. I would still encourage AS to apply for those positions, you never know, they may choose to interview you and hire you even without the BS.

They have been trying to do this for years, making the BSN the minimum degree for licensure. I doubt it will ever happen, but if it does, the AS nurses working now will either be grandfathered in or given 10 years to get thier BS.
As far as working as a position lower than a nurse, its advised not to. If you take a job as a nurses aid, and you hold a nursing degree, legally you are held to the standard of a nurse and could lose your license. Not worth the risk, IMO.

The bachelor is not required yet. I am still entertaining the thought of going into nursing.
But the profession is slowly switching from Associates to Bachelor.
I would not start an Associate degree now and start for a Bachelor degree right away since the profession and hospitals are now asking for a bachelor degree.

Like others said- not true. But, many hospitals are requiring it now because (well, aside from the fact that they can, right now lol) but some local hospitals are trying to obtain Magnet status, and in order to do so, a certain percentage of their nurses much have their Bachelors degree or higher. It's a whole statistics/status thing.
I have also seen job listings lately that state that if you're hired after a certain date (like, Sept '10) and don't have your Bachelors yet, that you have 5 years (i think?) to obtain it.

It's being very strongly encouraged. I know people with an associates are having a hard time finding a job. Magnet status plays a role as someone mentioned. There is also a strong push for RNs to go back to school. new graduate RNs have to get their BSN within 4 years now and sign a contract on employment.

I work at a college with Nursing (farmingdale) i was told that within 10 years it will be a bachelor's degree only job. Now I am imagining that if your currently in a position and plan to stay in that position you don't have to worry but if you plan on moving around/applying or going up on the career ladder I would start working for that bachelors degree. I think hospitals really will be seeking bachelor degree students only soon. My friend has been a nurse for over 20 years but has stayed at a nursing home in the same position pretty much the entire time and doesn't have any plans on moving anywhere else so she isn't worried.
Farmingdale has a program for RN to Bachelors that helps people who have an associates degree with working knowledge to earn credits for a bachelor (along with taking classes.)
