My husband is a general appraiser. I know you must be good at math and you must work as an assistant for 2 years before you are a full appraiser. He works mainly with commercial, I "think" residential is a little easier.

I am a licensed general appraiser. The process is not as easy as it is to get your real estate license. To become an assistant you need 150 hrs of course work, several courses, and pass a state test. Then you work under someone for about 2 years till you can apply for your full license. The appraisal institute has all the information on their website.

I'm an appraiser (certified residential).

You'll have to take the classes to get your assistant license and then pass the state test and work experience requirements (at least 2 yrs worth) to get your appraisal license.

Its a time and $$ commitment. Much more involved that the realtor license but if you have appraisers in your office that you can train under, it may be worthwhile.

Re: Anyone a Real Estate Appraiser?

I worked at an appraisal firm during summers in college and in grad school.

It is a great line of work IF you have someone who will allow you to "apprentice " with them.

You need A LOT of apprentice hours before you can go out on your own...which makes it tricky to get a gig.

A lot of times appraisers will give you some work (so they can make $$..you do the work they make half the money) but not enough to earn enough hours (this is just what I saw)...so you are kind of at their mercy.

The commerical liscense is the money maker and that is harder to get. You must first get the hours on the residential liscense and then have to have someone with a commerical liscense allow you to work with (under) them.

I hope this was somewhat helpful Chat Icon

You don't have to do residential work before commercial work. If you wanted to get into commercial you could just work under a commercial appraiser from the start
