Anyone at a NYC hospital?
Hi ladies! I want to formally introduce myself.
I'm Diana and I'm an 8 weeks 2 days today. DH and I had our first sono yesterday and baby bean is looking great, heartbeat is strong and we're VERY happy.
I'm wondering if anyone is birthing in Manhattan and if so at what hospital. I desperately want a natural/non medicated birth (assumnig there is no danger to the baby) but I'm finding that is very difficult to attain outside of a birthing center.
I'm currently at Cornell Weill and like my OB but their high c-secton rate scares me. Anyone else brithing in Manhattan?

Re: Anyone at a NYC hospital?
as of right now we will be delivering at Mt. Sinai. However, we are moving out of Manhattan in August so I am not sure what will happen then.

Mt. Sinai is great....definitely was a close call between Cornell and Sinai. GOOD LUCK!

Re: Anyone at a NYC hospital?
I was thinking about it initially, and you should look into St.Luke's. They have a birthing unit like you are looking for but it is in a hospital setting and if needed, they can roll you to the other side.
And don't be worried about the high c-section rates.. part of the reason they have such a high rate may have to with the fact that many complicated cases come to them.

Thanks, I hadn't factored in the complicated cases That provides some relief.
I've read amazing things about SLR's birthing center but if for some reason I am not eligible for a birth center delivery the day of, I am not a fan of the regular maternity ward.
Times like this I wish I lived in Greenwich Connecticut!

My sister gave birth at Cornell Weill and had a wonderful experience. She had a vaginal delivery!

Re: Anyone at a NYC hospital?
If you want a natural childbirth then find someone with a low c-section rate. The complicated cases are very few and far between. That is something that would DEFINITELY raise red flags to me and have me looking for someone else.
For my next I am considering St. Lukes because of the birthing center, I will be having a v-bac so I can't have a straight birthing center birth. But St. Lukes has one in the hospital I think the level below the birthing ward.
Also, if you want a natural childbirth, I highly recommend using a Midwife. If you still want access to a doctor many midwives work with OB's.
Here is a link to some Midwives who work for St. Lukes. link

Re: Anyone at a NYC hospital?
I am giving birth at St Luke's Roosevelt (hopefully in the next week!) and planning on using the Birthing Center there. I'm using an ob/gyn practice that fully supports births there, but as a pp pointed out there are also many good midwife options for the hospital.
Another reason, I've heard, for the high c-section rate in Manhattan is the number of "older" moms. I don't know if that's true or not, but just one of the reasons I've heard cited. I would definitely discuss your concerns with your doctor as soon as possible and see if you like their answers. I've heard it can be difficult to switch in Manhattan once you are already pregnant.
Good luck, feel free to FM me.

Re: Anyone at a NYC hospital?
Thank you so much for your responses! I will speak with my OB and see what makes sense...also will look into the midwife option.
Getting into a great College was easier than this...I feel so lost! Thanks again ladies and Phoenix, I look forward to reading about your experience at St. Lukes Birthing Center!!

Re: Anyone at a NYC hospital?
I actually had my DD at Cornell Weill in June 2010. I had an amazing experience; loved all of the doctors and nurses. My DD was a little stubborn to come out so the doctor gave me the option of a C-section or a vacuum delivery and I chose the latter. Everything turned out wonderful.
When I was pregnant, I also asked about their high C-section rate and the answer I got was that they have a lot of high risk births (and multiples) at that hospital which is why it is so high.
Good luck!

Re: Anyone at a NYC hospital?
i'm at NYP/Cornell. No idea about a high c-section rate, but I know plenty who have gone there and had natural births.

Same here! We're moving too but sticking with the hospital since we'll still be close.
