anyone bring their cat places with them/use a harness?

i will be bringing my kitten to work with me and i want to get her used to traveling and using a harness and all.

does anyone else use a harness for their cat? do they like it? does it take them time to get used to it?

my cats do not travel well so that is a no way for me. They'd freak if I try to harnass them. I can't even get a collar around their neck.

But every cat is different I guess.

For the most part cats do not like traveling or being confined. I guess if you must travel with her train her on the harness at an early age.

How is a harness on her skin? I guess it is not that different than the crested, so maybe a Puppia harness? Can a cat use that?

My parents travel with their cat, but not very frequently. (They have 2 homes and bring her back and forth betweent the two.) They do have a harness for her and she is okay with it. She will never be like a dog, though, and really go for "walks" on the leash.

We use a harness on my cat when we bring him in the backyard. He doesn't mind it at all and he loves being able to go outside! Chat Icon

I think it depends on the individual cat's personality.
I know cats that love to go on the harness, go in the carrier, travel etc.
But mine- forget it.
I can't even get the harness on her... she freaks out and screams and bites.
But my cat is just a very nervous skittish cat...

I used to put my indoor cat on a long leash outside so she could enjoy some sun but not run away. She didn't mind it. You can forget about trying to "walk" a cat though. I have never seen that done successfully. Cats are in no way like dogs when it comes to traveling.

I think this is a good point. If you start with her as a kitten, though, she might get used to it.

I got a harness for Jack so he could come outside with Matt and I in the summer and play in the grass, but he HATED it. He spent the whole time trying to get out and attacking the harness.

Out of 5 cats I've had, 2 LOVE going out and I took them with me all over, but the other 3 would FREAK if I tried it. You'll just have to see as Tuesday gets older if she likes it or not! Good luck! I hope she does like it, I think it's fun to take them out with me to places they're allowed of course... Chat Icon

Why would you bring a cat (or a dog) to work?

Chat Icon

I never really brought my cats anywhere - just the vet, or to someone's home if they were cat - sitting for an extended period of time. If I had to bring them somewhere it was in a carrier. They usually get so nervous that they pee and poop in the carrier.

No way. They would claw me to death if I ever tried that. But maybe with a kitten it would be different..

Re: anyone bring their cat places with them/use a harness?

at the airport the other day, I was sitting near a woman who had a hairless Spinx(sp?)

It was huge, had a harness and leash.

She had a rolling case for it.

She said the cat travels weekly with her and loves exploring new hotel rooms.

She was walking the cat around as though it was a dog.

oh weird thats the cat i got. they actually LOVE to travel.... or so i have heard. its probably one of the more common breeds you would see on a harness.

i realized today (brought her home last night) that she is WAY too hyper to even THINK about taking to work at this point.

i brought her to the shop today for about 45 minutes while dh was getting tattooed. she loved it.... but then she was being a monkey and trying to climb everything. the last thing we need is her climbing the tattooists legs while they work. lol

thanks everyone for your responses!

My cat probably wouldn't mind it, but I never had her in one. She loves to go in the car and look outside and see the sights. She's like a dog I swear..Chat Icon
If you get her started as a kitten maybe she'll be okay with it going forward. Good luck!
