Anyone buy a house and then realize right away they bought the wrong house?

We only moved into our new house at the end of September and already I want to sell it and buy a new one. I hate the way the property is set up ( I didn't think it would bother me at all) The upstairs is too small. The bedrooms are too small, the basement floods so we can't use it. There are too many trees and not enough sunlight. Im just so bummed with how I feel about this house.

i'm sorryChat Icon
maybe you can make small changes here & there to like it again?

the good thing is, you COULD always sell it..nothing is ever set in stone! Chat Icon

as a soon-to-be-buyer, I must ask: did you have an inkling you were "settling"? or did you love it?

i ask because i'm trying to avoid regretting anything.

Re: Anyone buy a house and then realize right away they bought the wrong house?

well you can always sell it if you are that unhappy with it....

BUT

try to remember the reasons you bought it in the first place, there had to be things that you liked...

and maybe you can work on the things that you dislike - like fixing the flooding issue - maybe there is something you can do to prevent floods? maybe cut down some trees? maybe get new window treatments that will let in more light? even add a window or two if that's possible? i know all of these things cost money but maybe if you work on them a little at a time you will be more happy?

YES!!!! The day we took possession of the house we knew we made a mistake. We have been trying to turn it into a forever home but it sucks/ We have wasted so much money on our "move in ready home" Chat Icon Chat Icon It all started when I opened the door for the first time and was overcome by the smell of dog urine and smoke. I still want to know how she prevented us from smelling it any time we went before he closed. Chat Icon And then there was the busted roof, rust filled hot water heater and busted pool filter.

Re: Anyone buy a house and then realize right away they bought the wrong house?

We have some regrets about our home.

We have a flooding issue in our basement too.

Also, we bought our house in the winter time so didn't realize we are on a "main" street that goes down to a local park so there is quite a lot of traffic. Chat Icon

Our house is also small, but that to me is personally what I think adds to it's charm.

DH I think gets more discouraged than I do because he does construction for a living and doesn't feel like he got what he wanted. He does have a lot of the compare game going on though.

Re: Anyone buy a house and then realize right away they bought the wrong house?

Yes...sort of. I just posted something similar recently...

We loved our home but not our location. Soon afer we moved in, we started seeing that the location was really a problem for us.

As time as gone on, we have done nothing but work, and now it's just too small and the layout doesn't work for our lifestyle anymore.

But when we bought it the market was hot and the inventory was limited, so we knew we were settling on the location. And now we can't take it anymore, we are house hunting currently and can't wait to go. This house is slowly driving me insane. I feel your pain.Chat Icon We tried to get over the things that bothered us but they have only gotten worse for us as time has gone on.

Oh, we also don't live in a really good school district either.

Fortunately, we have a few years before we need to worry about that issue.

Re: Anyone buy a house and then realize right away they bought the wrong house?

YES!!! We bought new construction (from a lousy builder - only now do we know) on a street that has oil tankers drive on it (didn't know cause the 3x we looked at the house we didn't hear or see those tankers).
So we decided to live here for at least 5 years. I am a SAHM and DH owns his own business so we are thinking at least 5 years till we will be able to save for a mortgage again.
To answer a pp question about settling...I saw the double yellow lines on the street and the small backyard and questioned it to DH. But he got so excited about the kitchen and it being new construction that I went for his happiness instead. Well sure enough, 1 month later - he was miserable for those reasons. So trust your gut and if you have any doubts, I say keep looking.

I hear everyones pain.
lesson 1. Listen to each other. If you both don't agree move-on. Bring a close friend you trust to give an honest opinion.

Lesson 2. never use a pushy Realtor. Find one that answers all your questions and lets you decide.

lesson 3 plan to stay in your home for 5 to 7 years. It is going to take you that long to recoup your costs. So if you have 1 child and you plan on more, have a least 4 bedrooms, you need the extra space.

Lesson 4 The best trick of the trade. When you do your walk thru the day of or the day before closing, bring the inspector back in with you. All the furniture is gone and now you can really see what is going on. It will be the best money you ever spent.

Good Luck

we feel that way, sometimes..

we purchased a condo before we were married, actually signed the papers before the market tanked and after the crash - we could have afforded so much more the home prices dropping..

dont get me wrong, its an awesome condo. brand new and has literally everything BUT, we need more storage, we would LOVE a backyard, basement, garage etc.

we do plan to sell within the next 2-5 years Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Anyone buy a house and then realize right away they bought the wrong house?

YES! I went to see this house on 3 seperate occasions and at night there was never reallly that much traffic until I moved in and realized what a busy street it is. The house needed to be gutted and we have worked and worked until my credit cards were maxed so we took a year off of working on the house to pay them off. DH and I were overwhelmed also. We thought we could sell it right away but we bought right before the market dropped.

I was thinking about selling and started going to open houses and MLS and realized that my house is updated and looks nicer than alot of the houses in the area that are selling for more than what we bought.

Sort of, though it's not the house that's the issue so much as the idea that I probably shouldn't be a homeowner. I lived in apartments for soooo many years, and I miss having the leisure time on weekends to do things other than home repair or yard work. Our home is 60 years old, and it seems as if something is constantly going. We've done tons of work on the house or improvements, but very little that I'm excited about (chimney work, plumbing, gutters, etc.).

But DS loves the yard, and we all love the neighborhood. The school system is great, so I have few complaints really or few that we cannot change.

So yes, but as I said, it's more about homeownership not being such a great fit for me personally.

I did. I should have listened to that little voice in my head! It's a great house but too far from work, friends and family. I knew it when we bought but didn't think it would be such a big deal. It's also a little small. I didn't realize how much space we needed.

We got a 2 bdrm coop with a huge attic (the size of the coop so strorage is not an issue at all)...we like it but had we gotten married a year later we would and could have bought a house Chat Icon

We have kinda just come to terms with it and said eh it is what it is and in a few yrs we will sell and then really appreciate our bigger home

Re: Anyone buy a house and then realize right away they bought the wrong house?

I also hate the house I bought! We bought it because it was new construction and had a big piece of property with woods all around where nobody else can build. But I HATE the location...I am another one who did not realize any of the times I went to see it how busy and noisy the location is. We can't even really enjoy our big backyard because of all the traffic noise. We bought at the height of the market so I don't see us being able to sell anytime soon. Chat Icon
