Anyone deliver at Nassau University Medical Center?

Was it a good experience?
Do they let you room with the baby?
Do they charge you for a private room?
Do they encourage breastfeeding?

Thanks!

Re: Anyone deliver at Nassau University Medical Center?

I don't know anyone who chose to give birth there. I haven't heard good stories...

numc scares me. really. The drugs in and around that hospital are so bad. If it was me I would pass it and go to Winthrop or Mercy

Thanks, I am asking for a friend actually. She told me she is delivering there b/c its the only hospital that allows water births and thats what she wants. That actually surprised me.

I had heard some sketchy things but I thought - "maybe I'm wrong, maybe its a great hospital "- so I figured I'd ask you ladies...

Re: Anyone deliver at Nassau University Medical Center?

It could be a good hospital but I wouldn't doubt it is the only one offering water births to draw more patients.... but it is known as a drug clinic. Sketchy it is. I don't think I'd go there if I was hurt (and coherent, that is). She could always do it at home?

I made the mistake of going the ER there once when I was pregnant. I was hysterically crying because I was spotting so much and thought I was miscarrying. I had drunk men yelling at me that I wasn't talking to them. It was a scary awful experience!!

The hospital has been on one of the baby shows a few times. I haven't heard anything bad about the maternity ward there.

Re: Anyone deliver at Nassau University Medical Center?

I gave birth there. I used a midwife and planned a waterbirth in the waterbirth room. I had a different experience because I was a private patient. But, I will tell you the doctors there were amazing. When my midwife called for a c section the doctor stopped it and gave some great advice and I wound up having my pain drug free birth that i wanted.

I had a double birthing room to myself until the last few hours when they got really packed. But, when I said I wanted to be alone they found me a room right away.

I had a private room and I never paid anymore. It was nice. The baby roomed with me the whole time. He left the room each day for an hour to get checked up.

The thing that got me was the other patients. I had very little contact with them.. but, in the recovry room there was these ghetto girls cursing and being soo loud at 4 am.

Then I went to the parenting class just to get out bed. I was the only married person over 16 there. I mean the girls were all soo nice it was just really sad.

The nurses were really busy and I got a bit less attention.. but, they were SUPER packed and I felt like I had a great support system and I didn't need that much attention. When ever I needed something however, I had it in two minutes..

I felt like I was left to dry by the lac. consultant even though they are gung ho breastfeeding. She was so overwhelmed and honestly I think she knew I had a team of midwives and my mom who was a breastfeeding instructor. She spent very little time with me.. altough she did stay past her work hours the first night to help me. In the end, it was my Mom who figured out how to get him to latch and got me breastfeeding.

ETA: If she is doing a waterbirth.. she is with a midwife and will be a private patient and should have a fine experience. I actually went there for a secod opinion on my high blood pressure in pregnancy because I felt put off by Madonna and the president of the pre-e assoc. of North America is the head of OB there. He was wonderful. Spent a ton of time with me and actually he was the one who saved me from the section. He even came to my room to visit me and the baby a few days later and consulted with me when my pressure continued to rise after the baby was born.

I don't know anything about giving birth there but my DH was taken there via helicopter after a bicycle accident he was in. They saved his life!

They may not be all glitz and glam, but I know they did right by my DH.

I dont think the doctors or hospital itself is "bad" I think because it is such a high trama hospital (people get airlifted there) it is very busy. I think also gets some people that arent always upstanding citizens (they took my grandmother their once and I remember gun shot victims being brought in with police guards)

I agree. I honestly think that the staff that works there is fine, but it's the "clientele" so to speak that gives the hospital a bad reputation, and that's simply because of its location and proximity to bad neighborhoods.

I agree. The Doctors and Nurses are actually really great. They do alot of great things- but I think that they have a bad reputation considering it doesn't look like the nicest hospital- and sometimes the people that are there aren't the greatest.

I used to think the same exact thing- that it was a horrible, horrible, scary place that I would never want to set foot in it- but I actually work there now, and my opinion has changed drastically! Its not a bad place, I promise!

ETA for grammatical errors.

We had a GREAT experience!

Our Midwife was Wonderful and everyone was very accommodating. DH was with me from the moment we arrived until we left. We had a private room and our Baby was with us at all time unless they had to do a check up. No extra charge for a private room. I successfully Breast fed our last DC but the nurses did come in to see if we needed any help and gave me Lansinoh.
