Anyone delivering at a hospital that is 30+ minutes away?
I really love my doctor and I feel comfortable with him. He is associated w/ a hospital that is a little over 1 hour away (NS Manhasset). I really don't want to change doctors if I don't need to. Anyone else w/ a bit of a trip to deliver?

Re: Anyone delivering at a hospital that is 30+ minutes away?
I'm delivering at NS Manhasset, as well. With no traffic, it's about 20-25 minutes away. The last time we went, for the Level 2, it took us 50 minutes. I just keep telling myself that that was unusual, and I guess I'll just hope for the best (and no Mets games) when I go into labor. I'm assuming however long we might be stuck in traffic, I'll most likely be in labor for much longer. .

I live close to JFK airport, and my hospital is LIJ...Ive gotten plenty of "practice" driving there with or without the highway, tops it takes us about 20-30 minutes. Im not nervous at all about the distance.

Re: Anyone delivering at a hospital that is 30+ minutes away?
I am in the same boat as you. I live in Brooklyn, and my Dr's hospital is in Staten Island. I've received a bunch of recommendations for other docs near me, but since I had my first visit, I don't want to switch.... I might have to though, it is at least 40 minutes to SI without traffic from where I live.

I am in Suffolk County and I am delivering at LIJ. I have been going to my OB/GYN for over 20 years, and I would travel over state lines for him.

Re: Anyone delivering at a hospital that is 30+ minutes away?
I had the same concern. I delivered at LIJ and it is about 30-40 minutes with no traffic. They said when I arrived it was perfect timing though because I was exactly 6cm dilated and they were able to admit me ASAP. (They gave me an epi right away and he came about 3-4 hours later). I gotta be honest though I was very stressed never having given birth before living at what seemed "far away" and worrying that we'd not make it on time. It didn't help while I was having labor pains that my family was all chill and relaxed, eating baked ziti and my FIL, retired NYPD guy kept saying "well if he comes early I HAVE been TRAINED to deliver a baby..................".
My biggest piece of advice though is to go to the hospital when you feel like you need to. My doc was all chill-laxed too about my coming in but again, she is THERE and I wasn't ;).

It's about a 30 minute drive to stony brook for me, but well worth it with the NICU and everything else there.

Re: Anyone delivering at a hospital that is 30+ minutes away?
I'm delivering at Winthrop, which is about 25 min away from me. At first I was nervous that it was too far, but I'm comfortable with my doctor and the hospital and I heard from a lot of btdt moms that it shouldnt be an issue.

Re: Anyone delivering at a hospital that is 30+ minutes away?
I have my first appt tonight (at 26 weeks) with a new doctor because we decided delivering in Oceanside and living in Northport just didn't make sense.
I had originally planned on sticking with my doctor no matter what but he just stopped delivering and I was seeing a new Dr anyway, so I had to agree with DH that it didn't make much sense to stay.

Re: Anyone delivering at a hospital that is 30+ minutes away?
OMG im in the same boat. Im delivering at North Shore Manhasset too and I live almost 50 minutes away. I live all the way out east. I love my doctors! I love the hospital- I had my DS there as well 2 years ago. When I went into full blown labor the car ride was terrible.. I was in dying pain and there was rush hour traffic! My husband had to drive the shoulder of the LIE at like 80 miles an hour cause I was in screaming pain. But Im doing it all over again!!!!! Its worth it in the end!!!

I live in Suffolk and delivered DS at Winthrop. Suring the day it was 45 minute drive. Luckily I went into labor late at night and we did a 2:30-3:00 AM drive there and it wasnt so bad.

Re: Anyone delivering at a hospital that is 30+ minutes away?
I am also delivering at NSUH Manhasset. I live about 20-25 minutes away with no traffic, my problem is if I go into labor when I am at work I am in Northport and a good 45 minutes away with no traffic. That said, I am still keeping my doctor and staying with that hospital. Hopefully everything works out well!

Re: Anyone delivering at a hospital that is 30+ minutes away?
I am delivering at NSUH and i live in W. Suffolk. It takes me about 40 minutes. For me, the problem was that I needed a hospital and Dr. that could handle high risk and Stonybrook is even further away.
I will be a scheduled c-section so hopefully I won't go into labor before then!!!

Re: Anyone delivering at a hospital that is 30+ minutes away?
I live in Levittown & I delivered at Stonybrook. It's usually about 45 minutes without traffic. The car ride in labor wasn't particularly comfortable or enjoyable, but I made it. Fortunately I didn't have to head to the hospital at a high traffic time because that could've been bad.

Re: Anyone delivering at a hospital that is 30+ minutes away?
I delivered DD in the city at St. Lukes/Roosevelt and I live in Merrick. This was my first baby so I was not too nervous about delivering on the side of the road. The contractions speeded up at around 5:00 on a Tuesday afternoon so we left then. We made it to the hospital in under an hour. DD did not arrive until 1:30 am, so I had plenty of time.
I am hoping to talk DH into letting me keep my Dr b/c I love her But I do not know if he is willing to go through that stress again
