Anyone else just really hate being a teacher now...
Its just not the same anymore. Im tired of paper work, data collecting, etc....
Its taking away from good planning time, i feel like Im not doing what my first grade kids need. I spend my whole prep filling in rubrics for stupid things, or grading tests that do nothing for me - but its good data collection..... Who plans on their preps? Not me!
Ive never been so anxious and stressed before. I keep myself p at night thinking of the 104468274639 things i havent gotten to yet... Or te kid that i feel like i didnt do enough for (bc frankly wi 31 students how much time can i give that one student)
All my coworkers feel the same.
I can see a lot of good teachers leaving the field - its sad! I use to love my job
Summers off just doesnt seem like enough of a perk anymore either

Yes. Things have drastically changed in the 14 years I have been teaching. I'm hopeful that it will get better. ( I'm a perpetual optimist) Until then I am putting forth my best effort to meet the needs of the kids. It's getting harder with the federal government in my classroom.
That said, I still love to teach and I'm home with my DS at 2:30 every single day so I am counting my blessings.

Re: Anyone else just really hate being a teacher now...
I left in June, for lots of reasons, but I knew I would not be able to keep up with all these things. For some reason I'm still on my school's email list and everything I'm reading is making my head spin. I really feel for my old colleagues, and everyone who teaches. I hope all these changes result in good results but I think long-term there will be a lot more burnout.

You hit the nail on the head. All I do is administer assessments and grade them. These assessments are pointless and I really resent that I am forced to give my students these for "tracking" and data purposes.
Everyone at my job is trying to figure out what other jobs we can do just to get out!

Unfortunately, I feel the same! The days of getting to know the kids and enjoying them are long gone..now we and they are all just numbers and statistics...and they ask us to do such inappropriate things developmentally for kids..things they are not ready to do...it makes me sad but I really can't think of something else to do!

It is intense! Even the music teacher was telling me how now my kids will need to be writing in his class. In the primary grades.
Come on??? When do kids get to have some fun in school. I though they at least had music art and gym. Nope!
Hugs to all of us

Re: Anyone else just really hate being a teacher now...
All of my colleagues are saying this. We are stressed beyond anything we've ever experienced. It makes me so sad. Thankfully, the kids are the positive spot in the whole day for me and after 19 years in education, I still enjoy the kids. Sure, I'm working 10 hours a day and bringing home work for the first time in 10 years. And I say this cautiously, but another positive note is my administration seems to understand how ridiculous this appr stuff is. They are making this as easy as they can on us. They're not trying to "get" us. At least I feel that way. Sigh--it's just not what it used to be.

I hate to be the other side but I really have no issue with the changesFor me, the data collection is no different. I teach an ABA class for kids with autism. Teaching is evolving and I think it will honestly be for the better.

Seriously?? I can't believe that anyone who is actually in education believes that these changes will actually improve anything. I had to waste a day of teaching my AP high school students to give them an assessment after 2 days of lessons- just so I would have a baseline. We spent 2 staff meetings discussing how to fill out the paperwork for SLOs. I spent more time doing this then I did actually preparing lessons. My students (10-12 grade) complain that they were forced to take tests the first week of school in almost every class. Once we are judged on the progress- teachers are going to fight with other teachers and guidance counselors over who gets placed in their class. Some kids who dont test well are going to be the ones nobody wants on their stats. This does no good for anybody ESPECIALLY the kids. I am behind where I was last year in lessons and that really stinks when the AP exam is in the beginning of May. HOW do you see this being a positive?

I kind of agree. I love data. It makes progress tangible to me. I think the assessments we do really do give you a good idea of the skills that kids have, so there is less wasted time. We do different types of assessments, that can be completed through playing, observations, etc. so it maybe is less difficult that those in gen. ed. My school does 6 baseline assessments in the beginning of the school year (ECAM, SANDI, ABLLS-R, Fountas and Pinnell, TEACCH and the WADE), and I think that starting with all of that information really helps plan meaningful lessons. I also like having proof, so that when someone comes in and asks "What are you doing?" I can show them, through assessments, why we are playing cars together or sitting around chatting about what we had for dinner through assessments that show deficits in play skills and expressive language, kwim? I also can show data on why certain students are not participating at certain times, or why a kid needs a 1:1 para, etc. through behavior data. I like that insurance. It feels good for someone to ask you why and you to slam a stack of papers down and say "Here's why."
That being said, I am newer in the profession and I also work with students with autism, so data has always been part of the deal. It is not much of a change for me, because most autism programs have been operating this way since the nineties. I take data on everything, so its not that big of a deal to me.

Sp ed is def different. I get the need for data. Not all adta is bad, but now they want it on every single thing and it makes no sense. So much Of it I find useless. I want to just teach my kids!!!!!! There is no time for them to enjoy school.
I have 31 1st graders ( 20 of which are low esl) giving all these assessments takes forever and taking away from instructional time. It takes me a month ( or more) to just do f&ps on them. I have to level them 3 times a year. Now add on all the other stuff, when am I conferencing??
Not to mention my school is nuts and (for just one example) assigns us subjects for bulletin boards every month that are due the first of every month. They have to show rigor and have rubrics ... Oh and they give,us write ups (mini observations) on them and hand out. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place plaques (causing unnecessary competition btw collegues. Tis is just 1 additional ridiculous thing we are expected to do on top of all the new regulations.

That sounds crappy. I am very lucky to work for administrators who "get it." They are realistic and pretty supportive of us as teachers. We have to do a lot, and we are responsible for a lot of data/rubrics, but they are realistic when it comes to timelines, etc. I also teach 8 kids, so I feel like their expectation that we know a lot about each kid is warranted. We share a building with a gen. ed. school and I can't imagine what they go through. Some classes are 30+ kids....with no para and gen. ed. schools are getting lots of kids that are high-need, several grades behind, etc. Their kids aren't much different than mine, and they have 30 of them. Its a tough spot. I see both sides. I wish that administrators could support teachers more, to enable all of data collection to happen, but without just throwing more at teachers, with no support and consequences for not being able to keep up with the growing work-load.
There is a reason that I will NEVER leave self-contained spec. ed.

I'm currently a SAHW, although I am writing my memoir and may eventually go back for a degree in social work, publish my memoir, and have a private practice where I specialize in infertility and pregnancy loss (while selling my book to clients and elsewhere). We'll see... It's hard for me to focus too far into the future. For now, I'm enjoying my roll at home and what's great is I know how much I'm appreciated - something I didn't get much of at my old job. Unfortunately, being a teacher just isn't about teaching anymore. I'm good at teaching, but not data collection and wasting my time doing all the other crap they expected of us. I have a really hard time staying motivated on a job when I feel clueless

Re: Anyone else just really hate being a teacher now...
I hate that people who have no idea about teaching make the decisions. With that said my school is pretty easy going about the entire APPR thing. We gave the pre-tests one day in class and then set up the SLOs. My department head set it up so it was a pretty painless process and it really didn't take that long. I have been evaluated under the Danielson model for the last four years so not too much is changing in terms of that. Also remember - your administration does not want to rate you as ineffective or developing. For each teacher with a rating like that, they will be "dinged".
I have a few different frustrations about the teaching profession. -I hate the negativity that we receive in the press. -I hate the politics involved (unions, etc). I will say I believe they are a necessary "evil", but I think they are often the reason why we are negatively portrayed in the press. -I wish teachers who went above and beyond actually got recognized. Due to the politics involved, however, everyone gets the same pay no matter what. -I hate Last in - First out!
To answer, what else can you do? Look into jobs as publishers like Pearson and Scholastic. They work in publishing, developing assessments, developing professional development.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but please allow me - I did all I could to keep my mouth shut yesterday at the nail salon when this woman was bashing teachers. It is so upsetting to go to work and know that you are being forced to do things that don't help kids - and then will probably be blamed later for doing it when everyone realizes how backwards this system is. For those that said they like data - data is very very important in education. But, creating pointless documents to collect pointless statistics is a waste of time and taking teachers away from teaching. Sometimes I feel like I'm in the twilight zone, how could this really be happening, it makes no sense. How can you compare teachers to each other equally when nothing about their jobs is equal? I pray every single day that someone is brave enough to say......enough.......and give teachers back the freedom they need to do the job they were actually trained to do. Not this frankenstein profession of test administrator, data collector, police officer, babysitter. Today we spell education - P O L I T I C S and it is really wearing me down.
