Re: Anyone else not taking childbirth classes??
We won't be taking them either. Just to hard for the schedules and after working all day for me. I have about 5 DVD's I will watch and we are planning on going to the hospital tour. I have been told that is fine.

Re: Anyone else not taking childbirth classes??
We didn't take them. We watched laugh and learn in childbirth at home on our couch. When I was in labor there wasn't any breathing technique that could help me deal with that pain....and then I wound up having a c-section anyway in the end.

I agree. I'm not taking them either. I honestly believe that the class if for those that want to feel prepared. Therefore this class helps them ease their nerves. But i really believe that there is no way to be prepared for child birth! Therefore i'm skipping it.

Me too. I have no desire to sit through a class that is just going to freak me out more then I already am. I will read some books and maybe get a video, but beyond that I am at the will of the L&D nurses

I know this might sound lame but can you go with a best friend. When we went there was actually a woman there with her mother.

Re: Anyone else not taking childbirth classes??
i didn't and don't feel like i missed anything.
the drs and nurses tell you exactly what to do.. and I delivered a healthy baby girl. I don't think if I took the classes it would of helped me.

Re: Anyone else not taking childbirth classes??
We did not do them per our friends' advice (waste of time and money!). We watched the DVD laugh and learn. It had enough info.
Don't worry if you don't do any classes. They will tell you what to do at the hospital.

Re: Anyone else not taking childbirth classes??
We didn't take one either. I recommend the Laugh and Learn DVD. I ordered it from amazon. It is broken down into "classes" of about 35 minutes each so you can watch at your leisure.
BTW- I agree with the PP that you cannot really prepare anyway. I wound up needing a c-section and the breathing exercises didn't work for me...

Re: Anyone else not taking childbirth classes??
My midwife actually makes us take a childbirth class which she teaches.
And my Doula comes to our house a week before my EDD and does a 2 hour birthing class.
Other than that we haven't enrolled in any classes.

Re: Anyone else not taking childbirth classes??
I wasn't able to - either they were all booked up or they were scheduled while DH and I were working. I watched a DVD which helped a lot as far as being able to recognize the signs of pre-labor, but what helped me the most was a nurse at the hospital. She helped me to breathe through a contraction and it was all the instruction I needed to get me through the entire delivery.

Re: Anyone else not taking childbirth classes??
We're not taking them either. DH and I rented 2 childbirth/lamaze videos from the library and learned a lot. We'll also be doing the hospital tour. I can't imagine what else we'd learn by attending the class.

Re: Anyone else not taking childbirth classes??
We took them last time and although I could have survived without them, we were told if I had a c-section and DH hadn't taken the class, that he could not come in the O.R. Well, low and behold, I had an emergency c/s and they asked him for the certificate at the hospital. They said it had something to do with insurance. This was 7 years ago at Southside and I do not know if things have changed.

Re: Anyone else not taking childbirth classes??
DH and I ran into the same problem so I booked a private class and the woman came to our house, it took about 3 hours I think, she was wonderful.
FM me if you would like her info...she works for enfamil and gave us lots of samples as well.

Re: Anyone else not taking childbirth classes??
Dh had a very busy schedule and I was working in NYC so we watched this video - it is done by someone who taught lamaze at Columbia Presbyterian and it covered everything that they did in the classes - this way you can watch it in your own time and it is in chapters so you can break it up. You and DH can watch it when it is convenient for both of you.
