anyone else's doctor tell them...
to eat a low-fat, low-calorie diet? she mentioned it's because she doesn't want to see me gain more than 25-30 lbs (i'm not overweight but i do weigh more than usual since i just got married, and i'd like to keep it as close to 25 lbs as possible)
i guess i just figured it would be ok to eat full-fat, full-calorie things b/c it would be more "wholesome" than not... it's not like i am planning on going on a diet, you know?

My dr didn't mention anything about a specific diet and I was very overweight when I got pg.

Re: anyone else's doctor tell them...
That doesn't make sense because you need to eat more calories because your pregnant . At least that's what I heard. I guess the smart thing to do would be eat healthier...lots of fruits and vegtables. Seems like most people gain alot more than 25-30 pounds. I was up 28 at 28 weeks.

Re: anyone else's doctor tell them...
I would question the doctor why she/he said that. My doctor never said a thing to me and quite frankly, i'd be a little insulted if he did. Especially since you're early on in your pregnancy right?

Re: anyone else's doctor tell them...
My dr did not say "low-fat/low-cal" However, they are advocates of you not needing to have a "eat for two" mentality. I think they said you only need to eat about 300 calories more each day. And that it should come from a balanced diet, good nutritious foods. If you are loading up on fried, sweets, desserts, "white carbs" then you are not eatting "healthy."
They mentioned that the more you gain over the 25-35lbs, the harder it is to lose it afterwards.
(ETA: Now is not the time to diet either!!!)
With that said I try my best to eat good and exercise, and I still have reached 30lbs. And I am only 31weeks.
My Dr has not yet said anything about it though.

Re: anyone else's doctor tell them...
The rule of thumb is that you should be eating approximately 200-250 calories more per day than you usually eat. In the grand scheme of things that's not a whole lot really.
A lowfat diet is fine for when you are pregnant, as long as you're getting all your essential vitamins and nutrients. Trying to set a goal for weight gain during pregnancy is just so unrealistic - every woman's body is different, and I really do believe much of it is simply genetic. While one woman will eat nothing but junk food and only gain 20lbs, another will eat so well, still workout, and will gain 50lbs!
Take me, for example - with my pregnancy with Alex, I gained over 50lbs. But, I have a VERY healthy, organic, whole grains, fish only diet, and I walked 3 miles a day with my husband during my entire pregnancy. It's all just a crap shoot sometimes, unfortunately!
The good news? If you BF at least, it comes off VERY quickly

Re: anyone else's doctor tell them...
My doctor never said anything like that and I think I certainly could have afforded to lose 20lbs before getting PG. He did say try not to eat for two but assures me that I am doing a good job and just says "if it is good for you, it is good for the baby...just eat in a way that is good for you." Since it sounds like you are not 100% clear (I wouldn't be either), I would suggest bringing it up with your doctor for further discussion.

Re: anyone else's doctor tell them...
your not supposed to diet when you are preggo. However, my doctor did tell me with my last pregnancy to try and not gain more than 25lbs. Well I gained like 33lbs so I was a bit over.

All my doctor said was to not gain 100lbs, don't eat any fancy fresh cheeses, raw meats/fish anything she can't pronounce.

I love your doctor!
Also just as an FYI, there is a PG at my job (have not seen this myself, but another PG here told me this) who is trying to keep from gaining too much so she eats a WW Smart One for lunch everyday. Be careful when trying to be careful because those things are chock full of sodium! Some diet foods are not such a great idea for the baby even though they are super convenient. You may already realize this, but there is someone at my job who obviously doesn't so it is worth stating just in case this helps any readers. We can't really say anything to her because that is out of line...she can eat dirt sandwiches for lunch if she wants and it is no one else's bees wax. Instead, I just post about it as gossip here.

Re: anyone else's doctor tell them...
My doctor didn't tell me to follow a certain diet.
But she did say to be aware of what I am eating and try not to gain weight too fast.

Re: anyone else's doctor tell them...
My SIL is a nutritionist and had a baby in March - you do not need to eat more than you usually do in the first 3 months of pregnancy. For the last 6 months, you should eat between 200-300 more a day - basically another small meal.
Are you sure your doctor was suggesting a diet? Low-fat, low-calorie foods are part of a healthy diet and you should make up the majority of your diet, whether dieting or not - ie, the fruits, veggies, water, etc that someone else mentioned. Pregnancy isn't really the time to let yourself eat anything you want anyway.

Re: anyone else's doctor tell them...
I gained 50 lbs during my pregnancy and my dr never mentioned anything, until the VERY end where she suggested I lay off the carbs and switch to whole grains, etc, but this was because DS was almost 10lbs at birth.
At 2 weeks pp I had already lost 25 lbs, now almost 4 weeks pp I have lost 32 lbs of my 50....

I totally agree with this!!! I think genetics also has a huge part it in and your body will just do what it needs to do to support your baby!
