I thought the reason you should avoid the back is compression of the internal organs- which would occur once the baby is big enough to compress them. My doctor told me at my 24 week appointment that was when I should really "try" to sleep on my side, but that it wasn't mandatory.
Your body will make you shift if it's uncomfortable.

Yes!!!! I'm 27 weeks and today had a terrible stiff neck, I'm at a desk all day so when I go to turn it kills!!!! I'm going to try more pillows tonight, we will see...you are not alone 
Edited to add...
My doctor never said not to sleep on my back, I found that my body just won't let me because I get shortness of breath in certain positions, I can't wait to sleep on my back and belly again!

oh good lord - ive been sleeping on my back this whole time.. i go to the doc tomm and will ask them..
where do you get these pillows everyone talks about - snoogle or cuddle u - something like that??

I got my cuddle u on Amazon but I think it's too big. I use it for napping - it's in the guest room. I think I am going to invest in a snoogle too.
I can't fall asleep because I am soooo uncomfy on my sides, which is messing up my shoulders and causing my damn headaches.

I have dreams that I am still sleeping on my stomach...I miss it!
I actually still do - and my back. I can't sleep on my left side, my arm goes numb. I fall asleep on either my stomach or my right side.

I wouldn't worry about the fact that you've been sleeping on your back! I've learned from being on here that all these docs tell us diff things! I asked mine at my 12 weeks appt and he told me only my sides, others tell them its fine- who knows! Def ask and see what he says.
You can get the snoogle at BRU or amazon, and I've only seen the comfort u on Amazon! The comfort you is about the double the price of the snoogle thogh!
