Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
DD has no interest in tv, i don't put it on for her either, so she has no favorite characters besides Winnie the pooh since that's her security blanket and how her room is decorated.
People r asking what her favs tv shows/characters are and they don't believe me when i tell her she doesn't watch tv.
Why is that such an awful thing to do? It's a good thing to us she doesn't watch it.
Anyone else toddler not watch tv? Do they have any favorite characters?
ETA: I'm proud she doesn't watch tv, i just don't get why people in my life are shocked and don't believe me that my toddler doesn't watch tv and make me feel bad that she doesn't have any favorite characters. Her fav characters are mom/dad and amelia :)
I"M NOT looking for a debate whether tv is good or not or what goes with it, just wanted to know if anyone else's toddler doesn't watch TV.

Re: Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
My son didn't start watching tv until his almost 2nd birthday. Now (he's 3) he has his favorite characters and his shows that he loves to watch.
My daughter (15 months) will watch what her brother's watching for a second but it doesn't grab her interest unless it has music or something like that.

Good for you for doing what you believe in. Andrew watches TV and I am glad he does and have no problems with it. He has learned sooo much by watching TV. Things that I never would have thought to teach him but so glad he learned it. If that makes any sense. Plus it gives me time to get ready for work in the morning or cook dinner ETA: I am also trying to teach him Spanish so he watches Muzzy.

Re: Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
Our TV is almost always on (I like the background noise. But Kaitee could care less. She doesn't ever watch it unless she sees and animal or a baby. But once the animal or baby is gone she is done with it.

Wait i'm confused So by not letting my DD watch tv i'm robbing her of learning stuff? Now i feel bad :( I'm not offended in anyway, i'm just wondering

Re: Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
Every child is different but I do feel that if Andrew didn't have some of the shows, his vocabulary and sentence skills and overall knowledge at his age wouldn't be the same as if I taught him. Maybe because I am just not a good teacher

You are not doing anything bad at all! I didn't mean to come off like that.
But in my case, my son has learned so many words and catchphrases that it's remarkable. He watches alot of educational shows so it's not like he's learning junk. he knows numbers, colors, abc's, days of the week, different foods, etc. Kids are like little sponges so they pick up so much in that 30 minutes you know?

Ok I get what you are saying
BUT on the other hand, if Andrew didn't watch TV his vocab might be the same as well, you just never know and of course we could go on and on about this But never 2nd guess your teaching skills :)
My DD's vocab and sentence skills are pretty good too without watching tv and she picks up stuff pretty quick too.
Honestly, some days i would love it if she would sit for 1/2 hour so i could run through things, but I wouldn't have it any other way now.
To each is own! I just don't get why people in my life need to judge me on that to why i don't let her watch tv. I am not a passive person, so their comments of course do not get let go without my commenting right back

Not taken like that, just trying to understand the other side of it. This is the debate i have going on right now IRL
Dh and I love her not watching tv, and honestly, we don't have noggin or nick Jr. so most of the shows kids her age watch, she can't anyways.
Just sometimes it makes me 2nd guess our choice and you know the last thing you want is to feel like your slighting your child by not subjecting her to something everyone else's child is.
There's no way she'll even sit and watch if we tried. Dh and I watch Veggie tales on Saturday ams, she doesn't care at all :)

Re: Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
I don't think it would bother me if DS did not show an interest in TV. I do think there are things to learn from it, but there are things for kids to learn in many places. As far as learning about different characters. they are in books, too!

Re: Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
AT 15 months Ryan has very little interest in TV. He'll watch the wiggles if they're singing and dancing, and likes the higglytown heros song (because we sing it to him) but would never sit and watch for more than 1-2 minutes staring from his high chair. I am fine w/this. He'll be glued to it in no time, I'm sure. I actually look forward to being able to occupy him w/TV for a little while so I can get things done.

Re: Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
My son is the opposite, he is mesmerized by the tv sometimes.
He watches his Baby einstein dvds and he will watch some PBS shows, but once in a while he will stare at the tv when we have our own shows on, I can't balme him though we do have a 52 inch plasm screen so its hard for him to miss it
ETA: we are very carefull that we do not watch anything with violence in it, I don't want him exposed to guns, fighting, ect... if I can help it

Re: Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
Mine doesn't i don't agree with it. i just think too much tv isn't good for their brains. we didn't have so much tv growing up- we had sesame street, mr rogers, the electric company- when it was on, it was on- if you were home, you watched it... if you were out- oh well- no tivo, no dvd, no tapes. and then there were saturday morning cartoons- and if you were allowed- you vegged out for a few hours watching after breakfast- but most often you schlepped around with your parents...
I get the same shock that you do- people can't believe DD doesn't watch it- but i just want her to play and explore her world..
edited to add- there are too many studies out there that theorize that TV watching isn't good for developing brains...I don't know if that is true or not, but I err on the side of caution...

Re: Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
My DD doesn't watch tv. She is too active. She is going to be 1 and could care less about Backyardians, Sesame Street and the like. I am glad she doesn't like it most days but sometimes I wish she would just veg out with me in front of the tv on my truly exhuasted days

Re: Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
Ella doesn't really watch TV. She wasn't ever into Baby Einstein, and TV shows don't hold her interest for long. Lately (she's almost 18 months), she'll ask me to put he TV on, but she only watches for a few minutes before returning to her toys.

Re: Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
My toddler didn't have any interest at all in the telly, we would put it on the kids programme and he would just carry on doing what he was doing.
That was until he discovered THOMAS THE FRICKING TANK ENGINE.
Damn you Thomas.

Re: Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
Our TV is on at all times and yet, our 1 year old DS has NO interest in ANYTHING - no cartoons, Sesame Street, nothing. If music is on, he'll dance to it, but he won't sit and look at the TV for more than 2 seconds. I would like him to watch a little bit of children's stuff but what can I do, maybe once he gets older he will be more interested.

Re: Anyone else's toddler NOT watch tv?
My DS (20 months) just recently started watching tv. He doesn't watch a lot, but I do feel a little guilty because I know it's because I've gotten lazy with my 2nd pg.

I'm not trying to start a debate either, but I do have to agree with others who said their children learned a lot from educational shows. My DD learned to count and recognize numbers at 18-19 months. I never ever taught that to her... Sesame Street did. and she didn't even watch SS a lot.
If she is playing with her toys I turn it off. And on days when she doesn't nap well, I 'll let her veg out to Diego or Curious george for 20 mins. I don't see the harm in that.
I have to say though, it pisses me off when MIL and FIL turn the TV ON for her. If she's playing and interacting with you , why do you want to distract her with televsion? I don't undertsand why they do that.

I think that's great! Who cares what they believe. Some people think everyone has the same parenting skills as them.
I wish DD didn't watch SO MUCH sometimes.
