Anyone ever been to Iceland?
I've always wanted to go, and DH asked me what I want for my 35th b-day (in June). I would love to go there, but I have never spoken with anyone who has actually been. Also, my DS will be only a year old. Is this a place where he can go too?
TIA

We were just talking about going to Iceland. You could speak to a travel agent about renting a holiday cottage somewhere in the countryside and driving around to the local sights there. Thats what we would like to do. I like the idea of a holiday cottage rather than a hotel because its like a home rather than a room, you would have a kitchen and more than one bedroom.
I don't know about in the states, but I know in the UK you can rent villas or cottages anywhere...
This might be a trip we do in the next year. I am dying to go to see the Aurora Borealis before we have our next baby...so we might do something like that.
My husbands favorite band at the moment is Sigur Ros, they have just made an amazing film called Heima and its absolutely stunning landscape. They travel around Iceland playing the most beautiful music to people in small towns and villages. Its amazing.

That is a good idea. I am going to ask about a house or cottage rental than a hotel. That might also make things easier to travel with DS. I want to go to the springs and I hear that the countryside is incredible.
How far is the trip from England? Maybe we can combine it with a visit to the family......

Re: Anyone ever been to Iceland?
We use Iceland air all the time when going to Europe... Its about 5 hours to Iceland and then 3 hours to most places in Western europe.
We always look into stopping over in Iceland for a few days.. but it is RIDICULOUSLY expensive. The hotels may not be too bad, but the food, drink, etc. is insane!! Even by NYC standards.
Airport food is always expensive, right? We got a cheese sandwich, a tuna sandwich and a bag of chips and it was $35 at Iceland airport!!
We've read that beers are $10-12 each, a small pizza $25 each, etc.
This really takes away from the fun for us when we travel because its hard to "splurge".
That being said, if money is no object, its a beautiful country!

Re: Anyone ever been to Iceland?
We went to Iceland in June 2006 as part of our honeymoon. I think there are a few pictures in our album. We flew Icelandair and stayed in Iceland for a few days and then headed over to Denmark.
It was absoutely amazing and we had an incredible time. It is really like no other place we have ever been to before.
We went at the end of June and it was 24 hours of sunlight - it's crazy! It is also still pretty cold there in June. We wore jeans, sweatshirts, and usually needed a jacket too.
There are many amazing things to do there - we swam in the hot springs, saw lava fields, travelled around the Golden Circle, and much more. However, most of the things to do are concentrated around Reyjivank, so you don't need to spend 2 weeks there. We were only there for a few days and it was fine. You can easily combine it with a trip to another city in Europe.
As for the hotels and food, I beleive we stayed in a Radison there and it was expensive. Food and drinks can defintely be expensive. I wasn't the biggest fan of the food - I felt like the menus were pretty limited and there was a lot of seafood (which I don't eat).
Please FM me with any questions you have about Iceland

Re: Anyone ever been to Iceland?
I have a brochure from Iceland Air and they arrange tours for you. It's pretty $$ so we haven't booked anything yet, but it is very high on the list of "must-visit" places. It just looks SO beautiful!!
