Anyone ever taken their child to this type of Dr.?
A Developmental Pediatrician? If so, do you have any recommendations ... I'm in southwest Nassau. Also any shared experience as opposed to going to a pediatric neurologist ... DS has a significant speech delay.

I took DS when he was 20 months old to a horrible Dev. Ped. in riverhead. We currently have an appointment with Dr. Adesman scheduled for August (made it in February)

We use Dr. Adesman. A wonderful man and very helpful with strategies and will help with IEPs if needed. We saw a multitude of doctors and he is the only one that really "got" my DD.

I called the office and was told Dr. Adesman does not deal with speech delays but other developmental delays such as ADD, Autism etc

not for a speech delay....but other developmental issues , yes my son and daughter.
They usually take a good 6-8 months to get an appointment with.
My son goes to LIJ/Cohen's and we are happy there.

Re: Anyone ever taken their child to this type of Dr.?
I brought my DD to Dr. Scherzer, in Riverhead. While he was thorough, and very clinical, I don't recommend him. He had no bedside manner (although was gentle with DD), and had ZERO understanding for my older DD (who was 3, and who I had to bring with me). I actually got very anxious during the visit, because he kept scolding her.
Then I went to Dr. Marci Silverman, at Cohen's Children's Hospital in Commack. I also don't recommend her. While she was also very thorough, and much nicer than the previous doctor, and she did actually tell me what she thought my DD had, she did not prepare me for what it was! I had no idea of what the diagnosis of Angelman Syndrome was or the implications of it. She just said, "I think this is Angelman Syndrome. Let me know when you get the result of the DNA test." And she let me leave. I walked out of her office skipping, thinking that I finally had an answer, after 9 months of searching for one. When I went home and googled it, I found out...no speech...ever; mental retardation; seizures; difficulty walking; difficulty using her hands; the list goes on and on. I felt like I'd been punched in the stomach. I think she could have prepared me a little bit for what I was about to find out about my baby.
I hope the doctor you're seeing is better.
