Re: Anyone following the Titanic Submersible
Very sad, after reading so many articles about how this vessel is controlled is scary, such as a video game controller to steer. There is supposed to be inflatable balloons that will help it float in emergency, but I guess that malfunctioned. The host from Expedition Unknown was supposed to go, but something wasnt working, so he skipped. Maybe this is a sign it is meant to be undisturbed.

Exactly. It is very sad, of course for all involved but this is something that should not have been done.

Re: Anyone following the Titanic Submersible
This whole thing is fascinating to me and has put me down a rabbit hole of learning about extreme adventures. I didn't even know this was a thing you could do. Quite frankly, I had no idea the titanic 1. Is still in the ocean and 2. That it sunk not too far from us. Maybe I should have paid more attention to the movie. LOL
I'm not sure why you would want to do this other than to say you did it but the risks are so high.

Anyone following the Titanic Submersible
This sounds truly horrifying to me! The odds of finding them alive are pretty slim. I hope it just imploded quickly and they didn't suffer. I can't imagine sitting there for hours just panicing while oxygyn runs out. It's horrible.

Re: Anyone following the Titanic Submersible
I am very sad for their families but these people took such an unnecessary risk. I can't even fathom doing something like this. I feel bad for the wife/mother of the father & son that were on board. I would kill my husband if he took my son on something so stupid, if he wasn't already dead.

You have never seen any other things about the Titanic as there is no way they would have been able to get it back on land?

Sad in this day and age people need to "one up" another person and all it seems to take is money now.

Re: Anyone following the Titanic Submersible
It’s sad. I don’t want to criticize the people lost, but I could never get in something that used an Xbox controller.
That being said, some people have a deep fascination with the Titanic. The owner of OceanGate is married to a relative of someone who died (owner of Macy’s) in the Titanic disaster. I think the Titanic was something the owner was very interested in. Unfortunately, he probably should have paid more attention to safety. He seemed to have suffered the same fate of those who died in the Titanic disaster.
I guess maybe it is equally comparable to explorers in the 1400-1500s. People back in those days must have thought it was crazy to cross the Atlantic or sail around the world, or in the 1960s with going into space.

I am sorry they found wreckage but, I am glad they didnt seem to suffer. I couldnt imagine just waiting not knowing if anyone was coming to find me (I also would never do that though - if I had $250k to spare, that would not be on the top of my list of activities).

TBH there is a lot of talk about how these were explorers and comparing it to space exploration etc. However, to me this is a recreational endeavor. I understand they say they are learning something about the amount of decay but I am not really sure how that is comprable to exploring places that humans might possibly live one day. Not to mention there is no need for actual people to go down there when we can send down robots to do the exact same thing. These were thrill seekers, plain and simple.

Re: Anyone following the Titanic Submersible
The aunt of the 19 year old said that he didn't want to go, was terrified and was only doing it to please his father. That makes me so incredibly sad.

Exactly - they were just lookie loos since the Titanic had already been explored.
It's so hard to feel sympathy for them. I get that people died (and it sounds like their death was rather horrible for a minute or two), but the hubris is undeniable.
It seems like the Titan had already made several dives previously so I get why they would think it's "safe" but clearly the overuse of the Titan was too much. They just didn't have great safety checks.

Re: Anyone following the Titanic Submersible
Thank god they died instantly and probably didn't even see it coming. I feel sick over the 19 year old, but it's hard to have too much sympathy for the rest.
I would never in a million years have gotten into that death trap that you're bolted into from the outside and then maneuvered with a game controller. All to be able to look at the wreckage through a tiny little porthole. I'm shocked at how many times it DID make it down there and back.

Re: Anyone following the Titanic Submersible
The mother of the 19 year old came out and said that he wanted to go and she gave him her spot. I don't know that I would be able to live with myself if I were her. Even though the alternative would have been that they left two children with no parents, I think that would have been better than his life being cut short at 19. Either way, why people would take such frivolous risks is beyond me.

I think it's just when certain people have too much money than they know what to do with they do stupid things like this. I feel like if I had that much money I would give it to charity before blowing it on some stupid life risking adventure to no where. And don't get me wrong, I love the history of the Titanic and find it fascinating but just go visit one of the many Titanic museums if you want to learn more. There was no reason for this.

Right? Like Musk and Zuckerberg going to fight in a ring. Really? Like how much do they really need? Such a waste of money.

I thought that was to raise money for charity - or did I misunderstand the point?

But where’s the money coming from anyway? Us!!! The people who will PAY to watch. Why not just have a contest to see which billionaire will donate more of their OWN money?
