Re: Anyone getting nervous about the increasing number of elderly people still driving?
Posted by KLSbear
And as far as I can recall, the constant headlines and stories about the horrible accidents that happen too often around hear are not 60 year olds, it's 17 - 25 year olds and drunks. They scare me a lot more - I don't see the elderly zipping along the Southern State at 85 mph weaving in and out of lanes and traffic.
ITA!!!!!! any near miss accident I have had was not caused by someone elderly. its always been a young person who thinks there is no else in the world but him/her
IMO, if we're going to re-test, I say it should be the entire population! I bet 1/2 of the drivers today would fail a roadtest.

And what a great way to lessen traffic and increase mass transportation!!!!!

I do think what some people on this thread are saying is a form of ageism.
My 97 year old grandmother has macular degeneration, she can't see much of anything, her sister is 98 and just had hip replacement.......do you want to share the road with them?
Well the 97 and 98 is WAY different then the 60 you originally suggested.

I suggested ALL elderly, to each his own with the definition......
And I guess 11 states are violating the elderly's rights by discriminating because of age...... interesting
This is interesting as well
'According to studies, senior drivers have the highest rates of fatal car accidents per mile except teen-agers. '
here's another interesting one
especially this part describing how 'at age 65 drivers face an increased risk of being involved in a vehicle crash' fascinating!

Re: Anyone getting nervous about the increasing number of elderly people still driving?
There are bad drivers in EVERY age catagory, but I do think that after a certain age, people should be required to take a driver's test. -
No one wants to get old, and just b/c you're 'young at heart' doesn't mean your eyesight, hearing, reflexes etc. are what they SHOULD be to be driving safely. -

Also interesting:
Older drivers have low crash rates per capita. When exposure (amount of driving) is taken into account, however, older drivers have higher crash rates than any other group except for teenagers.

I'm just posting to make the point that quoted numbers / statistics alone don't mean a whole lot unless you explain more fully how the statistics were created...
ETA -- Note that teenagers are still according to both statistics more likely to be in accidents than senior drivers...

Essentially we are saying the same thing. I agree that teens are more likely, but the OP was discussing elderly, and they are the 2nd highest. The findings also support that it is NOT unconstitutional to retest based on age.

They should just re-test everyone every 15-20 years...then there isn't any "ageism "
