Anyone go on a 3-5 hour car trip with a less than 2 month old?
We are going to go up to my parents house this weekend which is like 4 hours away and then go spend another 2 days with my DH's sister which is 2 hours from there. The longest car ride which will be on the way home from Ithaca to Long Island will be 5+ hours.
Has anyone gone away with their newborn less than 2 months old? Do you think that this traveling is too much? Or that the change of environment for 5 days will be too much? Or is it a problem that we are traveling/visiting before she has gotten her first shots?

Re: Anyone go on a 3-5 hour car trip with a less than 2 month old?
We went to Boston when DS was about 2.5 months old and it was fine. I sat in the back with DS. He slept most of the way. We pulled over so I could change him once and I bottle fed him along the way.
However, I've driven alone with DS and he has had a few meltdowns. i think having someone sit in the back with him makes all the difference.

Did a 5 hour ride with DD when she was about 6 weeks old. She slept probably around 4 hours of the trip. Try to time it around nap time when you go, the movement of the car keeps them sleeping. I think its easier then traveling with 9 month olds or 2 year olds!

I didnt but I dont think itd a big deal, I just had no where to travel to . Your DC will probably sleep the whole time in the car anyway.

Re: Anyone go on a 3-5 hour car trip with a less than 2 month old?
we have been going on 8 hour car trips since our babies were just a few weeks old. It wasn't bad at all. I think it was easiest to travel with them before they were 6 months.
When my oldest DD was 1 month old we went on an 8 hour drive, then a few days later we went somewhere else that was 6 hours away, then we went somewhere else that was 7 hours away then we drove home from there and it was 12 hours from home. She did all that in 1 week at 1 month old and it was a great trip.

At about 9-10 weeks we did a 3 hour car ride. She slept the ENTIRE ride. there and back. it was great.
At 5.5 months, we did a 4-5 hour ride, and she also slept the whole ride. she loves car rides

At 9 weeks old we took DS to Maine.
We left at 7am ....he slept until 10am!! Then we stopped every 1 1/2 hours or so after that for him.......worked great!

We did when he was 3 weeks old - we took a 5 hour trip to see my inlaws - and stayed at a hotel. He was fed in the backseat when needed...

When my son was 2 months old we drove from OH to LI for Christmas. He slept the whole time, would wake for short periods of time and I'd feel him in the backseat. I just sat in the back with him and we did fine.

We took DS to CT. last week (he was 3.5 weeks old) and he was fine. I sat in the back with him and fed him when he woke up. Otherwise, he slept the whole ride. Oh, and I changed him on the ferry ride across.

Re: Anyone go on a 3-5 hour car trip with a less than 2 month old?
we just got in the door from a 6 hour road trip (12 hours total - it was 6 hours each way).
she had two meltdowns - one on the way there...just because and one on the way home...because she had a major doody bomb and we were between rest stops (and it was a MESS - so there was no way to do it in the car on the side of the road).
other than that - she slept and we 'chatted' most of the way - both ways (she's into trying to talk, gurgling, making noises, etc.).
it was a LOT of fun to be honest!

i did and it was so much easier than this year's vacation with my son now being 13 months old! now we needed to stop and let him walk around. last year, we stopped once for ourselves and to change him but just fed him in the car.
