Anyone go to the opera? Question about attire

DH and I are going to the opera on Friday. I am not sure how either of us should dress. Should I go out and buy a dressy dress and DH wear a suit? I am clueless!

Thanks!

I've only been to the Met, but I've l seen everything from jeans and t-shirts to full on ball gowns. But those are the extremes. Most people just dress nice.

I would recommend you dress nice- as if you are going out for a special dinner. You can wear a dress, or nice pants outfit. He can wear a suit, or pants and a button down, or pants and a blazer (not necessarily a suit).

I've gone to a few and like Shelly mentioned, I've seen from ballgowns and tuxes to jeans and sneakers...I would definitely dress up dressy casual. Maybe nice dressy pants or skirt and blouse or a nice sweater, and for DH, dressy pants and button down shirt. You can do suits as well...skirt suit is perfect.

Hollie - We go all the time, have season tickets. I've seen everything from sweatpants (yes! Chat Icon ) to ballgowns. Depending on my mood, I typically wear a nice skirt or dress (something I would even wear to work), or a dressy blouse and pants.

Have fun! What are you seeing?

The respect and fanfair for the opera no longer holds true.

I usually wear what I'd wear to work - Corporate Attire.

Enrique would wear a suit, and I'd wear slacks and a nice shirt.

I would say nice yet comfortable. A nice pair of pants and top are just right. Likea good restaurant for your anniversary kind of outfit.

You can wear a nice pair of black pants and top. I think it's all over the board b/c you also have tourists in jeans and people in black tie.

Nice attire is fine!

ITA. BTW where are your seats? This also can dictate how I dress. If I am in dress circle I might go business attire, but when I have box seats I dress.

Have fun!Chat Icon

I've seen in before but I was a poor international college student in London when I saw it. I can't wait. This will be DH's first time seeing it and I am dying to see his reaction.

I need to go out and buy a new dress.

Re: Anyone go to the opera? Question about attire

As long as your're not going to the opening gala there is no need for a gown or tux.

Re: Anyone go to the opera? Question about attire

I envy you that you get to go to the Met. I haven't been to the opera in years. I always went to NYC opera though. My ultimate pipe dream is to go to the Met on opening day.

Re: Anyone go to the opera? Question about attire

I work at the Met. There's no dress code (you can wear jeans if you like!), but I always suggest at least business casual. People usually break out tuxes and gowns for opening nights, but many people will dress up for regular nights as well.

Boheme is my favorite opera. Chat Icon Enjoy!
