"Black Tie Optional" attire question. please help dress me!!!

I have a formal wedding to go to on the 30th of December. The invite says Black Tie Optional, but in talking with the men, most are wearing tuxes. My DH will more than likely wear his tux since he owns one, but he's not 100% sure (he'd rather just wear a suit).

So, do I need to wear a long gown? Or can I wear a nice bleck dress that is just below my knees, sort of like this?

Is this ok, or do I need to go out and buy a long gown? I am no skinny minny, so a long slinky gown won't work for me, and anything I think in my size will look too matronly. What should I wear!?!?

ETA: If I can wear this dress and get away with it, what color pantyhose should I wear, off-black or nude color?? I am wearing closed-toe, sling black high heels.

In my opinion, i think that dress is fine.

I know some other people would say go for the long gown, but I have been to black tie optional weddings too, and you get everything from women in cocktail dresses, to long gowns to men in tuxes and/or dark suits

I have worn that style dresses to these affairs as well and I felt dressy enough. Long gowns make me look even shorter than I am, so that is length I usually go with for anything...and this dress is black and looks nice so I think it would go great

I think that dress is fine for black tie optional! Although I do believe where the affair is being held has a great influence on that.

Are you going to "glam" it up with jewelry/accessories? Chat Icon

and I'd go with tan/suntan or off-black pantyhose. Chat Icon

It's at the Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove.

I've been collecting bling bling form DH for years, so now is my chance to wear something nice around my neck, so of course I'll be glamming it up! Something with a little sparkle and a lot of carats Chat Icon

So suntan color is ok?

Go for yours with the bling bling!!!! Chat Icon

And suntan is perfect! Chat Icon I often think "nude" pantyhose makes most women look too pasty/ashy on the bottom half.

I put "black ite optional" on my invites so people knew to dress. Some wore tuxes and gowns, some didn't and wore suits and cocktail dresses. But everyone looked great.

Trish - I think that dress is perfect. You will look great in it. I think I might try off black stockings. Have fun at your party.

If you have long hair and put it up, it will also "glam up" the outfit.

Trish--I love that dress, and I think it's perfect for a black tie optional. I had always thought you had to do a long gown for black tie events but I think it's not like that now. There are so many options. That dress is great!
