Anyone have a Ductless Central Air System?

This was my response to an AC post on FHF

We just moved back in to my parents house and they dont have Central Air. One bedroom has an AC in the wall and another bedroom has one in the window. Last year or the year before my dad bought 4 portable ACs and they wok well. The only thing that is a pain in the @ss is that you have to remember to empty the water bins our it can/will overflow....

They have owned this houe for 20 yrs but my Dad said that this is the last summer that he will go with out central air. They had gotten a few estimates a few years ago but it was $$$ because there really is no where to put ducts and the ductless systems were too expensive at the time.

I was wondering if anyone currently has a ductless system and if they are happy with it.

TIA!

my parents have a ductless ac in the basement, i think the rest of the house is the ducts...but i do know they love it and are very happy with it..they keep telling dh and i to put the ductless in, but right now that is not in the budget for us to do since we have other projects we needed to do first - but i wish it was!

Re: Anyone have a Ductless Central Air System?

I just went through this

I have no place to put ducts on my first floor, because we have exposed beams so it was going to take them a lot more time to run the ducts and cost more $

I priced out both ways, and the CAC came in at a much better price with all 3 companies that I got estimates from

another thing I found out when I was looking into buying the ductless units myself (because its a huge savings) and just having DH install them- you void all the manufactures warranties if you do not have an "approved" vendor install them.

I priced out installers if I already had the units and it was close to the price of getting the traditional CAC

I also don't like that with the ductless you don't have a unit in every single room nor the bathrooms. With CAC at least you get a vent in there.

Thank You for this response. When my parents got quotes for CAC a few years ago, almost almost everyone who came said that it was near impossible or the cost was way over my parents budget at the time. My parents want to get new quotes now though because they just don't beleive it CAN'T be done. Also their budget has increased since then so it may be a feisable option now.

I do have to agree with you about how the ductless system is limited to certain rooms. That sucks and its almost not worth the money since that would pretty much be same as we have it now with the portable units.

Can you share the companies that you got quotes from?

Re: Anyone have a Ductless Central Air System?

I would love to know the range of quotes that you ladies got. I know every house is different of course, but I was just curious to know. I'm sure this is something we will not be able to do for a couple of years, but I would love to save our pennies towards this kind of upgrade. Once we have the siding redone, I wouldn't want to have holes in the walls inside and out because we didn't do the CAC first. Chat Icon
