Anyone have a fireplace with a wood-burning insert?
If so do you like it? Are they expensive? DH and I are really looking into this because we have a very small house and it would be worthwhile for us because we would save on oil...

My parents put one in a few years ago and they LOVE it! I'm not sure how much it cost them though. We have a regular wood burning stove and love ours too.

We have one in our apartment and I love it!! It gets toasty warm and when I use it I dont need the heat on. Sometime I start sweating from it!! LOL. I believe you get a tax rebate if u purchase one. We live at my in-laws and they have one onside there home as well.

I have a friend who just did it, she LOVES it and regrets not doing it sooner when the inserts were cheaper a few years ago.
She did it early this month and I think tht total price was about $3000.

We have one. It cost around 5K but you can less expensive ones, and more expensive ones. We live in a colonial - The stove heats the entire downstairs. We only turn the heat on at night and sometimes in the morning just to get the chill out when we first wake up. I will also turn on the heat when we have friends come over and the kids want to play downstairs in the playroom. The downside is that it's a lot of work. Collecting or buying wood, storing it, bringing it in from outside in the snow.... The really good thing is that 1 tank of oil lasts us the entire winter and my thermostat during the day is always above 71.

We just got one and so far really like it. It cost about $5k and then there's the cost of the wood. We totally did not realize how much wood we'd be using. But it does keep the house really warm. We have a ranch and are able to keep the entire house at a decent temp.
