Anyone have experience with shingles (illness)?
My dad has this and has been in horrific pain for about 3 weeks now. It's mostly localized on his head and neck. he is so scared he is going to be in pain for the rest of his life Nothing is helping. Not even pain killers from the doc. It is awful seeing him like this. Anyone have any insight or advice?

I'm so sorry 
He might be in pain for a while. My grandmother had it and was unable to get her hair cut for months because she was so sensitive on her left side.
I wish I had advice but unfortunately it affects the nervous system, and I don't know of any painkillers that will help enough to give him real relief.

That's what I'm afraid of . I also wonder if there is anything he can use holistically for help. Vitamins, herbs, acupuncture, etc.

Maybe they need to start him on something for nerve pain, like neurontin, or lyrica. Have him ask about it.

DH had this a few summers ago. I have never seen someone in so much pain. He was immobilized and almost went to the hospital.
He took vicoden..the doc gave him the big guns. Also cymbalta believe it or not. Cymbalta is given to people who have nerve pain for diabetes which is similar.

I had it over 20 years ago. It was very painful and I have to say it took years for the pain to FULLY go away. But it does calm down alot after the initial outbreak. Hope he feels better soon.

My aunt had it.. suffered a YEAR! but it did get better and now it just a bad story (that year with shingles).

My husband had it and was in pain for more than a month. His mother had it and was in agony for 3 months. Effects everyone different.
Sorry he is dealing with this!

Thank you for the replies. Sounds like he may be suffering for a lot longer. So depressing He is very iffy about going on certain meds and like I mentioned no pain meds have even helped other than to just take the edge off so I am going to look into the holistic approach as an option. This blows!

My grandmother ha shingles on her face..got it 4 weeks ago n just passed away. She was 91 and her body couldnt handle it.. ...she was itching it like crazy..felt so bad but they were giving her benadryl n morphine for the pain.
I hope ur dad feels better!!!

I've had shingles numerous times. The first time was the absolute worst. The pain subsided about a month after the actual outward signs went away. Since then I know what to look for and it's been caught early, so the pain has been relatively minor to the point I didn't even feel it last time.

I've had it twice. Both times on my back/waist. The first time I was 14 and I remember using a medicine spray to numb the pain. The second time was 3 years ago and the doctor gave me some medicine/antibiotics for it. In my case, the pain didn't last that long. One thing, though, there is a little area on my back that is numbed and I think it is because of it.
I wish your dad gets better soon

I had shingles 5 years ago, on my back/waist. I had a bad rash that was so painful & itchy. The doctor gave me medicine for it & it went away within a month. But even now, I still feel tingling sometimes along the nerve in my back. I feel very fortunate that it wasn't more severe.

I had shingles and it was horrible. The pain lasted even after it was gone. My doctor said I had something called Post Herpetic Neuralgia (sp?) The shingles caused nerve damage which in turn caused the extreme pain. I was put on cymbalta for the pain and it works. I don't have the pain anymore. However as soon as I stop taking it, the pain comes right back. It sucks.

I had shingles on my arm right near my armpit a couple of years ago. The pain lasted several months, but has not returned, thank god.

Yes, this is what my dad is scared of and he hates the idea of being on that medicine. This doesn't look good. He is getting so depressed because he isn't really up to seeing my little ones- who are so close to him. Sucks all around. Thank you everyone for the feedback.
