Anyone "HAVE" to spend money on clothes because of their job?
I work in an industry where being fashion forward is a MUST. Basically the kind where even the assistants wear prada. Anyone else work in that kind of industry where you are somewhat scrutinizaed by how you dress? What are your tips-I buy desinger pieces for certain items and mix with more reasonable yet tailored clothes that look $$$ but not always $$$.

since my job is to convince retail buyers about what the next home trends are- it's important for me to look like I know what's going on- and professional at the same time

My job is like this too. I enjoy clothes shopping immensely anyway though, so it's not a big deal. I don't get caught up in the need to buy Prada or other really high-end things—I simply don't get paid enough for that. I tend to buy classic looking, mid-priced pieces and only splurge on things every once in a while. I do spend a lot on bags and shoes though.

we have a corporate atmosphere and must dress appropriately. It doesn't mean suits all the time but it means buying good clothes and taking care of them and having them fit you right.
Shoes also should be corporate but some tend to go trendy which is fine as long as they don't look like stripper shoes!
One assistant came to work in capris over the summer and she was sent home.

I would check out Century 21 & Saks off 5th for a good price.
thankfully, I do not work in a type of environment that requires high end dress. our dress code is business, but no one cares about labels.

Thats the type of environment I used to work in now its about who's wearing what. People get photographed sometimes so I think thats why but its tough on the wallet.

i know exactly what you mean. i also work in a very "posh" office. honestly - it really is more about style than labels in most cases.
i save by basically putting myself on every email list under the sun. i know all kinds of sales and specials and take advantage of them.
i also have learned what to really invest in. i only spend alot on jeans (which i can wear everyday), and shoes. these are things i will use for years to come. for things like shirts - i just go to express, the gap, or old navy.
also - try the lines available at target and kohls - they are deeply discounted designer. i also happen to work with multi-millionaires that i have seen purchase knock off bags in tijuana - so i try to keep all things in perspective at all times. if she doesnt feel foolish carrying a knock off - why should i.

Re: Anyone "HAVE" to spend money on clothes because of their job?
We're business casual, but since I'm often doing sales with people face to face, or seeing company big wigs, I've started to dress nicer and spend more $$ on clothes. We're not really scrutinized in terms of fashion, but where I work everyone is wealthy. I've been gradually collecting nice pieces on sale. I found a few brands I love Jones Ny, Anne Klein, Alfani, etc for work clothes and I wait for the big Macy's sales. this might not be as high-end as some people are referring to, but it's expensive for me. I find it's worth it. The clothes fit me soo much better and look so nice.

Re: Anyone "HAVE" to spend money on clothes because of their job?
When I worked in advertising in NYC, yes......since I could not afford designer clothes ALL of the time, I bought a few really nice things (ex. a Coach belt) and would mix it up with basics......

It's probably not the same level some of the women on this thread are talking about, but it's a lot to me, but I find it worth it to spend money on better clothes. I can't afford to shop at Neiman Marcus, so I rock Macy's!
