Anyone Here Have a Dog and Cat
Me and DH have a very good cat...who acts amazingly like a Dog in ways. However, we are hoping to get a Dog from a shelter in a month or so.
For anyone who has both animals at home can you share your experience with me. I will be sure to get a Dog that likes cats, but is there a way to introduce them. I really hope my cat does not hate me....

Re: Anyone Here Have a Dog and Cat
My experience: it was easier bringing in a dog than another cat. My cats (3 of them) are mildly afraid of our dog, even though he is old and decrepit. But he's very sweet- they pretty much steer clear of him but do not seem to traumatized. I got my cats one at a time, and boy, was there drama each time I got a new cat!
One of my cats refuses to drink from the water bowl once it's been sullied by the dog.

Re: Anyone Here Have a Dog and Cat
I have both a cat and dog. I had the cat before the dog, and it took 1 year of finally the cat getting used to the dog. He would not come downstairs, now they play and chase each other.

What types of dogs do you both have. I don't want to get a big one that can scare the cat or really hurt him.

I have a Bull Terrier. He is NOT that big. He is about 55 pounds. Believe it or not my cat bullies the dog

Re: Anyone Here Have a Dog and Cat
I got the cat from the Town of Hempstead shelter (he was about a year or so old) and the dog within the same week (a puppy). They got along extremely well from day 1.
We got another dog (puppy) about two years later and now all three are best buddies.
I've housed other cats though overnight and FORGET IT. He is not a happy camper. When he has to spend the night, etc. over my Mother's (if we go out of town) he gets all in a snit because she has five cats.
Other dogs, no problem. Other cats, watch out! We have a dude with an attitude.
He is only now starting to "accept" the baby. He isn't mean to her per say, but he avoids her like the plague and runs when she approaches him.

Re: Anyone Here Have a Dog and Cat
I have 2 cats and 1 golden retriever (Casey). We had the 2 cats for 3 years before we got Casey. When we first brought Casey home, the cats were terrified and hid from her for a good month. Since she was a puppy she adapted quickly to them. After a month or so, I guess they realized she wasn't going anywhere and they gradually started coming around. Now, TJ plays with her all the time and will sit near her, sniff at her food, etc. Lincoln is more cautious and literally runs past her when they are in the same room. It's so cute!
But be careful - TJ did swat Casey's eye when she was a puppy - because she backed him into a corner trying to play and he didn't know what to do!

Re: Anyone Here Have a Dog and Cat
Our dog is a shih tzu and two of our cats are big and fat, so there's not a big size difference. If the dog was big I think it would be harder.
