Anyone here have a manic depressive relative

I know my mom has issues- but shes driving me crazy!

She dosent take her meds, she skips Dr.'s apt's... and she is sooooooooo nasty!

I can handle the sluggishness, the "im not leaving the house" and all that stuff... but the nastiness is sooooo hard...

I swear- something that is not even close to being an argument... she makes a HUGE deal- and literally just stops talking to me for days on end....

I love her, and try to help her in every way I can- but Im so tired of "fighting" with her- when there is nothing to even fight about!

How do you handle it??? I try to blow it off- and remind myself... in a few days she'll be normal again... but its soooo fustrating when I wanna tell her something... and she refuses to pick up the phone... or just hangs up on me!

How do I intervene- make her take her meds... follow through with her apt.'s????

When she takes her meds... I can see such a HUGE difference... and I can immediately tell when she stops taking them... However she denies there being any difference....so she picks and chooses when she takes them...

This has been going on for years and every day it gets worse... I forsee this being a VERY serious thing if she dosent get better fast...

My friend's husband and it's a tough situation. I feel for her, she has a heard of gold and so much patience.

He is a really good guy, but this disease really puts a strain on the relationship.

Is she diagonosed as bipolar? What meds is she on? And who prescribed them?

Re: Anyone here have a manic depressive relative

I had a dear friend who was diagnosed manic-depressive and refused to take her meds. It was exhausting. I'm sorry I don't have any advice.

Thanks for the tip.....

Im actually not 100% of what her diagnosis is- I try not to pry- and although she admits she is depressed.... she has never actually informed me om what her true diagnosis is....

She loves her counselor, but her psychiatrist was horrible.. and she just switched... and she said so far so good....but a Dr can only do so much.... if she dosent live up to her end of the deal- then she is never gonna get better!

Re: Anyone here have a manic depressive relative

My mom is manic depressive/bipolar and a whole lot of other things.

What happens with her is that when she is on the right combo of meds she feels normal and thinks she no longer needs them.

As far as how I handle the mood swings, nastiness (all the ups and downs) I talk to dh and a few of my friends, just getting it out helps.

I also make it clear to my mom in a nice but firm way that I willl not deal with her nastiness and will speak to her tomorrow. THe following day when I call, she is usually ok- but she knows that I am not doing the pity party.

I know its hard, please feel free to fm me if you want to talk, I know how difficult it can be.

Re: Anyone here have a manic depressive relative

Do you know what manic depression is? Because what you are describing does not sound like it, unless she has episodes where she is totally opposite...Otherwise it is just depression. The manic refers to the dramatic highs and lows. Often bipolar people go on spending binges, spending thousands at a time during the euphoria periods.

Can you talk to your dad and find out what exactly is wrong with her? Without being able to talk to her about her issue it's hard to know what she should be doing to correct it.

You can't legally force her to go to appts or take medicine. Unless you feel she is a danger to others you can't even have her committed. But maybe your father can monitor her more closely if they are living together.

Re: Anyone here have a manic depressive relative

Unfortunately I don't think there's much you can do. You can't force her to take her medicine and you can't get information from her psychiatrist b/c it's confidential. How does your mom behave during her highs and lows? Do you leave your son alone with her? Do you worry about leaving him in her care?

I'd lean on your DH, family, and friends for support. I'm sorry you're going through this. It's very tough dealing with a relative who suffers from mental illness. Chat Icon
