Anyone install a fireplace?

Has anyone ever installed one of those gas fireplaces? Just wondering how much it cost (approximately) - we're considering getting one. TIA!

Re: Anyone install a fireplace?

This was "suppose" to be my witer project..but DH started working on the basement first & this got pushed to the side.
It all depends on the model,BTU's,mantel, exhaust from the top or back. Lots of factors. I priced @ 7-8 grand for something in the middle- not the best, not the worst... although I fell in love with a $15,000 one, yeah sure.
This includes material & labor.
Theres a great place we went to for lots of info..not the biggest selection but by far very helpful.

We were planning this when we first moved into our house also, but when I discovered the one I liked cost $8k I decided to use the money towards installing central air.

We now have an all new gas heating system, so it may cost less to install the fireplace, but the style I like is very expensive, so it will probably be next year's project.

we bought & installed a ventless gas fireplace this year. The fireplace itself looks more like the style of a woodburning stove. I wanted a vermont casting but they were almost 10 grand.
they have ventless gas fireplaces that have mantels & look more like a regular fireplace. Ours is propane & has no chimney. Its the same as using a gas stove. It gives off 32,000 BTUs & warms up our great room 18 X 24 with vaulted ceilings in a few minutes. my husband installed it & I don't think he spent more than $50 on the parts, the unit itself was $299 @ home depot.

What kind of maintenance does this require?
Changing the propane tank? more?
Also, since they just recently made the ventless legal, did you have any concerns going this route? We found a lot of ventless units at Lowes,HD,HomeExpo but I needed more convincing.

the only mainenance is the propane. We have no concerns about it being ventless, it does not give off a gas odor, it has a carbon monoxide detector built in-which shuts it off & we have a carbon monoxide dector in the the room which has never sounded. After much research I discovered that it is essentially the same as cooking with a gas stove. It has a thermostat & built in blower so we usually put it on & within a few minutes it goes off because the room reaches tempature, then if comes back on as needed.
I love it our great room was always the coldest room in the house & we hardly ever stayed in there in the winter, now its warm & cozy.
