anyone know a lot about fixing cars?

today the metal plate that covers the muffler/muffler hose fell off my car - it was all rusty and broken. My thought was to replace it, that if Honda put it there in the first place then there is a reason and purpose - not to mention replacing a piece of metal must be cheaper than replacing the muffler if something were to happen to it b/c it wasn't protected. DH says I don't need to get the metal piece replaced, but neither of us knows about cars. Does anyone know the necessity of this?

TIA!

Re: anyone know a lot about fixing cars?

is your car making any different noises now that the plate is gone?

i used to work on the car(s) with my dad...it sounds like that plate is there just to be there.

but if you can tell a significant difference in the sound of your car, then you might need it. like you can always tell when there's a hole in the muffler...the car will sound awful.
and if the muffler / hose is still in tact, then i would think its fine.

No, the car isn't making any different noises.

I *think* that sounds like the heat shield. I had to bring my car in for servie a month ago b/c I had a rattling/loud noise. They just took off the heat shield & it stopped the noise. They said it serves no purpose, and is fine without it.
