Re: anyone know about cameras???
It is a fantastic camera. I put it on sports mode for our honeymoon while we were ziplining and it was crazy. Did you buy the bigger lens?

i only have what it came with...but im not educated in photog. at all and i have no idea what any of this means.. and was looking for a more advanced camera then my little kodak..but i think this is a little too professional for what i was looking for..it takes amazing pictures but i really wanted something a little more "dumbed" down.... where i can zoom with a button not have to figure out how to work the lenses

Re: anyone know about cameras???
I have an EOS 350D DSLR and I use it like a point and shoot because to be honest, I don't know how to use it properly, but I still get fantastic photos with a super quick response time.

The Rebel is a fantastic camera and should function they way you want as long as you're putting it on the correct settings. Grab your owners manual and check to make sure you have some of these basics down, and you'll be shooting like a pro in no time.
1.) Make sure you have the settings on Auto-Focus, not Manual Focus! On my Canon 30D it's a little tab that slides back and forth on the lense - I think it just says AF and MF. You may need the manual that came with the lense but this is key in making sure you can auto-focus like you want.
2.) Read through the descriptions of those little icons on the wheel at the top - the landscape, tulip (macro), sprinter (action) etc. The fully automatic setting is probably a colored square that's smack in the middle. If you set that, all you have to do is point and shoot. That focus action will be so quick you won't know what happened. You don't need to focus before you shoot unless you want to.
Once you get comfortable with the camera you'll want to play with some of the other settings. The Landscape setting gives you maximum depth of field (it focuses on a wider range of objects instead of just the foreground with a blurry background). The portrait setting will give you the right settings for an attractive full-frame portrait. The Sports setting will give you a fast shutter speed to capture the action at the best possible settings.
Read through the manual and give it a little time - you'll fall in love with the camera.
If you want some easy-to-read books check out Bryan Peterson's series - Understanding Digital Photography, Understanding Exposure, etc. Great photos and easy to understand explainations.

Re: anyone know about cameras???
Honestly I would take the time to get to know the camera, you may find that you have more control using the zoom on the lens rather than a button (I find it much easier myself, but I learned on SLRs so the zoom buttom is really clumbsy to me). The zoom on the lens is more responsive to your touch, there won't be so much zooming past your subject and them going back. I think with a little time you may find that you like using the lens.
Also once you become comfortable with the basics, you will be able to do things with the DSLR that you would not be able to do with a basic point and shoot. The lenses you purchase can give you much more control over lighting and speed. You will have more control over your depth of field (what areas of the picture are in focus and which are not) as well as spot light metering (very helpful in different lighting situations where you dont' have an overall even lighting).
You will have to purchase more lenses, generally the kit lenses are not great and you'll want to upgrade if you want to really play with your camera. Once you get to know the camera, you will probably end up never using the automatic settings in favor of being able to control everything yourself.
If you think you will never use these types of controls than I would return the camera for an advanced point and shoot.
ETA: This website is a great resource for digital photography, both SLR and point and shoot
