Anyone know about or have had Sedation Dentistry?
I've been reading up on Sedation Dentistry in the past few months. I seriously need to do something. I have a true (though irrational) fear of the dentist. I had a root canal about 6 years ago and was so scarred by the whole process, I never went back. It still hasn't been capped and the tooth is starting to crack!!
I get SO anxious about this that I'm really considering sedation dentistry. Anyone here tried it? I need some background info and though I'd check.
thanks...

Re: Anyone know about or have had Sedation Dentistry?
My DH had it this summer. He said he didnt feel a thing, but he did hear everything that was going on.
After his procedure he was kinda loopy and he slept for a good 6 hours. He couldnt drive or watch our baby for a full 24 hours.

Thanks so much for the help, I haven't actually met anyone who's had this done (since it's quite a bit different than being under general anesthesia).
If you don't mind me asking, did your insurance cover this? I have a feeling that since it's not medically necessary, I'll be paying for it out of pocket. Also, who did your DH use? I see there's someone in Hicksville that can do it, but I'd rather go to someone through a recommendation.
Thank you so much for your help!

Re: Anyone know about or have had Sedation Dentistry?
Please, please go to the dentist to get your root canal finished. I had the same thing happen to me, I didn't get the cap made for the tooth that had the root canal, (they just put in a filling and I was suppose to go back) Well my tooth cracked and I finally went back to the dentist, and it is really bad, I have bone loss under the tooth, and the infection was still there, and I ended up loosing the tooth, so NOW I have to get an implant, which is MORE work then if I had gotten it taken care of in the first place.

I know that I really need to go. Logic TELLS me I need to go. I can't stand having this anxiety problem.

Re: Anyone know about or have had Sedation Dentistry?
Back in college, I was knocked out for a root canal and honestly, it was a horrible experience for me. I don't remember anything at all and was knocked out for about two days!!!
It messed me up so much I never went back to have the root canal completed. I had a temporary that eventually fell out and I went around with the tooth hollow for years because I just didn't want to go back to a dentist.
I think I finally went to a dentist three or four years later!!!
That was my experience.

Re: Anyone know about or have had Sedation Dentistry?
Hey I just wanted to let you know that I just asked DH about this, he's a dentist, and he said that if you just want to finish up the work on the root canal, its not going to hurt b/c the nerve is already dead. He said the longer you wait the more likely your going to lose the tooth

Re: Anyone know about or have had Sedation Dentistry?
Some insurances don't cover different sedation techniques (there are different gases)...
as far as the pain, you are still gonna feel whatever they do to you after novacaine wears off.
I was awake for 2 wisdom teeth. It sounds way worse then it really is. But instead of the pain your suppose to feel, you may feel a pinch.
With your tooth in particlar, it may need to get pulled as it got re-affected, (that is what is cause the pain)
I did a re-treat on a root canal (i didn't go back because of money/insurance isses) but i had a 50/50 chance. It depends how much damagae is done in the root and how much of the tooth is decayed. (i went though this also)
Believe it or not, you already did the hardest part. For the capping, they just make an impression of the tooth and the third part is installing it.

Re: Anyone know about or have had Sedation Dentistry?
In 2003 I did this. Insurance would only cover a very small part. I ended up paying about 4k to get my teeth fixed. WORTH EVERY PENNY! I too had an irrational fear of the dentist and hadn't gone in years. I was KNOCKED OUT! I know someone posted that their husband could hear everything, but I could not. I was out. I had my wisdom teeth out, cavaties filled, two root canals and a cleaning. I was in pain for a good two or three days but like I stated earlier, best thing I did and I don't regret it at all.

Re: Anyone know about or have had Sedation Dentistry?
Beth, where is the tooth? Is it in the front of your mouth?
I had a lot of work done to my teeth as a kid including 3 root canals, and have had general anesthesia for a wisdom tooth extraction.
Last spring, I got a lot of cosmetic work done and 1 filling (that had fallen out years ago) by Dr. Glassberg in Massapequa, on Ocean Avenue, just south of Merrick Road.
The tooth he drilled/filled was in the back and he put some numbing gel on my gum and waited a minute or two. By the time he gave the novocain, I didn't feel the needle AT ALL. I had to ask him if he was done.
But. He did the same for the front of my mouth when he was doing the cosmetic work and it did hurt, even with the gel. But it was a total of 10 seconds of pain and then it was all over. No more shots, no more pain. He fixed it all and it was fine.
What I'm trying to say is, if the tooth is in the back of your mouth where your gums are thicker, you won't need anesthesia if you find a kind dentist.
I wish you luck, I know how bad a situation it can be with the wrong dentist. If you want me to answer any other questions about Dr. Glassberg, shoot me an FM.

Re: Anyone know about or have had Sedation Dentistry?
Thank you ALL so much for your input.
I should probably add (since I wasn't very clear before...): My root canal was done incorrectly. My dentist (different guy) caught this on an x-ray. There's a piece of the nerve still in there, so essentially part of the root canal needs to be redone. The reason I'm looking into sedation dentistry is because this isn't my only problem. I also need two impacted wisdom teeth out, an additional root canal (most likely), and lots of other stuff, in addition to the crown.
Ugh.

Re: Anyone know about or have had Sedation Dentistry?
I have severe anxiety regarding going to the dentist, after numerous botched root canals and other problems that I've had with dentists. I have holes left and right in my teeth. I need a root canal finished, need one on another tooth and need LOTS of fillings. I refuse to go to a regular dentist and my husband is looking into finding me a sedation dentist, b/c I wont even do it myself at this point. He will also need to carry me into the car and literally DRAG me into the dentists office when the time comes. I cant eat anymore on either side of my mouth. Living like this is terrible.
