Anyone know any good Legal Recruiters?
I am trying to see if I can find a legal recruiter to help me find something. Any good ones? Thanks!

I am an attorney and several of my former colleagues from my old firm are in legal recruiting. I also have a law school classmate who is a recruiter with Lexolutions -- they do both permanent and temp placements.
Are you looking to work on Long Island? The recruiters I know mostly work for larger firms and companies in the city -- they don't really have placements on Long Island. (Although I know Lexolutions has attorney temp assignments that can be done from home.) In my experience, most Long Island firms don't use recruiters (because they are generally smaller and don't want to pay them).
I can send you the names and contact info for the people I know if you are looking for a permanent position in the city or temp work. Let me know!

Do you have a big law firm background? Assuming you're a lawyer, most recruiters only like working with big firm attorneys for placements..when I was admitted to the bar and met with all these legal recruiting agencies, a lot of them just slammed the doors in my face because I didn't have the "right" experience.

Nope, public service, which is preferably where I would like to stay.

I will FM you some names later. I think your experience is less of a factor than the fact you want to stay in the public service sector. I know the legal recruiters who contacted me when I was working at a firm, and those I know that are working in recruiting now, are generally looking to fill openings in the private sector (large firm or in-house position at large corporation).
I doubt they have openings in the public service area because non-profits and government agencies and the like probably wouldn't have the budget to pay a recrutier (since the employer pays).
But I will send you my contacts later (gotta find the info for you!).

In the legal field, recruiters get paid by the company that hires them to fill a position.
So in other words, law firm x is looking for a mid-level litigation associate. It hires a recruiting company to fill the position. That's why recruiters do a lot of cold calling, they are looking for candidates to fill the job openings they are trying to find someone for. If the candidate they send gets hired, they get paid by the law firm (usually a % of the annual salary of the employee that got hired).
Some recruiters may place more emphasis on career counseling, but for the most part, they are just looking to fill openings for the companies that hire them.

There are definitely recruiters for other fields. I know my dad is in insurance and used to get calls from head hunters all the time.
You can search for "executive search firms" on line.
I think they usually always work for the employers, which is why you have to take what they say with a grain of salt when they are trying to entice you to go to a new position. And since the employer is paying, it is usually larger companies that can afford to use recruiters.
My only real experience with this, though, is in the legal field. I used to work for a very large firm and was recruited often, and I have friends who now do legal recruiting. But I am much less familiar with how it works in other fields.

I am currently 8 mos pregnant, though, & am looking for part-time positions on Long Island for after my baby is born. Also no big firm experience, but I had several internships throughout law school in public interest and smmall firm, private practice. Any ideas?

# 3 seems the most likely option and unfortunately, they will hold pregnancy against you because some of the doc review projects require long hours and overtime, sometimes weekend hours. For every job posting, they have easily 3x as many resumes from all NY/NJ metro area law school graduates and attorneys who are unemployed.

Wow, those are depressing
To the new grad-it is tough when you are pregnant or a new mom (I am a new mother). There is fierce competition for even the worst job.
I am inundated with rejection e-mails. The only job I can find is a per diem gig that called me for only two appearances thus far, pays terrible and I do it with joy because I need it on my resume.

I heard good things about Lexolution too.
If you are an experienced attorney, I know some good recruiters- but they work in the city.
Michael Prager is a good recruiter in Long Island.
