Anyone know anything about Social Security Disability?

Re: Anyone know anything about Social Security Disability?
it only has to be "EXPECTED" to last 12 months....You can apply for SSI the day you become ill...if you expect your illness to last at least 12 months
You can apply for it at the local SS office.
I can tell you that My Uncle was on it for congestive heart failure. They denied him first time around, approved him on appeal.
My other uncle was on it when he had Hodgkins ...
And my Aunt with MS.
Its not hard to apply.
ETA- If its for you....Cancer is definatly a coverable disease.

Re: Anyone know anything about Social Security Disability?
Deb,
Isn't there a social worker assigned to your case through the hospital? If not, there should be. They can assist with all of the paper work and do the foot work for you. Depending on your income or lack there of, you can also qualify for Medicaid if your DH doesn't have health insurance, or if you cannot afford Cobra.
Thinking of you often and admiring your strenght!

Hell yeah it is...unfortunatly its MORE then enough.
My uncle when he had hodgkins was ok other then having to go to chemo and he got approved right away. He was on it for almost 3 years I think.

Yes because you cannot work, bottom line. The illness is preventing that .
Like MS for example...Its not a treatable illness, its progressive, its covered.
ETA- Maxed out radiation how? No more is healthy for you or insurance wise etc?

From their website: website
There's a Social Security disabilty attorney on the site but I'm not sure if that's state specific.

Re: Anyone know anything about Social Security Disability?
Disabilty is about not being able to work, not about the treatments. I can't imagine you wouldn't qualify.
My SIL was on life support & they were still fighting that she was disabled.

Re: Anyone know anything about Social Security Disability?
I work for SS but not in the claims dept. You can do your application online & eventually you'll have to either bring your documents & evidence to an an ofice or mail in the originals.
You have to have enough credits (usually 20) from working but if you don't qualify based on that you can probably get SSi (supplemental security income) which is based on income(kind of like welfare). You can't apply for ssi online though. There are also special provisions for vision impairments also.
Go to: www.socialsecurity.gov & look at the disability section.
One thing, sometimes it can take a long time for cases to be approved, like 6 months to a few years. You can also appeal if you get denied. You can also have an attorney help you but they get 25% of any back payments as their fee.
What else. . . .the earliest you can get payments if you're approved is 5 or 6 months after you became disabled. So if they find that your disability started 02/2003 then you will be entitled from 07/2003 or 08/2003
You get covered for medicare 2 years after your start date unless you have kidney or renal failure (you'll get it sooner)
I really recommend the website & always follow up on everything because we process cases months behind.
Hope that helps.

SSI is different than SSD, SSI is based on finances, SSD is based on inability to work, you will definitely be eligible, I apply for SSD for my patients every Monday morning. It takes 6-8 weeks fr award letters to be sent out, some states have the 800# where it is touch tone answer system, it takes longer to proces wen you fill out paperwork and send it in, and I hate to say it, I have had NUMEROUS cases where the applications "conveniently" get lost and SSA has no record of it . Please FM if I can help you

Re: Anyone know anything about Social Security Disability?
yes, but be prepared. Every application is initially denied, no matter what the problem. I was told this by someone from SS giving us a training. Their theory is you have to be unable to be out of work for 1 year, by the time you reapply its usually a year.
You should definately qualify.
ETA: BUt definatley get the help of the social worker from your hospital

Re: Anyone know anything about Social Security Disability?
my mom is on disability with Fibromyalgia (sp?) she cannot work. Her case was denied here in NY (the SS Dr. didn't even report on the correct problem) and she tried to handle it all herself, she then hired Binder and Binder (everyone laughed at her 'cause of their goofy commercials) but they won the case for her. The process took 2 years I think and in the meantime she had moved to Florida permanently, they also have offices in Florida.
HTH
ETA: I was just looking at their site and they do have a large Q&A section, may answer alot of questions - and a free online evaluation.

Re: Anyone know anything about Social Security Disability?
You certainly should be eligible! I was on SSD once because of my epilepsy and my former fiance was on it because of his MS.
BUT, Definately call them! As most said most cases are denied & you have to appeal your case but when you are awarded it goes retro to the date that you FIRST contacted them - that phone call.
Always keep good records -
Copies of EVERYTHING!
A record of dates of phone calls or appts & who you speak to.
NEVER mail anything unless you send it return receipt requested - they lose EVERYTHING - and get a receipt when you drop off paperwork. (I learned the hard way).
GOOD LUCK Deb!!!!!
