I live a few blocks away and only noticed yesterday that is looks like it is being torn apart... I always wanted to eat there but never had the chance..

Does anyone know what they are doing with the old church that is a few lots up?

I heard from someone in the W.I. Association group that it's going to be a Tapas restaurant.

The old church is being re-done as a medical office. They're keeping the original look & feel, but had to dismantle & re-do a lot of it to bring it up to new town codes.

A tapas place would be great, though I'm sorry to see the Parkwood go. That place has been a fixture in WI since I can remember. My parents love that place! I hope the new restaurant to take it's place is as good as the Parkwood.

And THANK YOU for sharing this info about the old Greek Orthodox church! You have no idea as to how sad I was to see that place being (well, what I thought to be) knocked down! There just something inherently wrong with knocking down any kind of religious building. I'm so glad to hear they're restoring it!

Yes, I think a lot of people felt the same way! It's such a nice looking building & adds some character to Montauk Hwy. From what I understand the church was de-sanctified several years ago & the large cross that was outside was returned to another church of the same faith, in Lindenhurst I believe. I'm guessing that most of the religious items inside were sent there as well, which is a nice thought. I'm not really religious, but I agree with you - it would have been weird to see it knocked down!

ETA: I'm curious now about the Parkwood possibly being a French restaurant instead so I'm going to talk to some of my spies...if I hear anything, I'll report back early next week lol

Agreed, I'm far from religious, but it just seemed so wrong! Not to mention, it DOES bring some character to Montauk Hwy. Between all the commercial properties, the church and the LaGrange just sitting there rotting, that section of highway has become such an eyesore.

Do tell if you hear more on the possibility of a french restaurant going in!

DH noticied the Parkwood the other day and thought they were re-doing it perhaps. I didn't think they would fence it off though if they were fixing it up! So sad to see it go. Food was always so good there!! I always loved to see all the white lights at Christmas time there!!! I hope the good restaurant is just as good!!!

Yeah I wanna know about Lagrane too!!!! It been like that for a long time!!!!

So far there have been no new developments with the LaGrange that I know of which is very sad...it is literally just sitting there rotting. I did notice that there has been some activity in its back parking lot lately though...every now & then I see 2 or 3 cars in there and some people going in & out, but they look like they're workers, not suits/the owners. I wish they'd do something there Chat Icon

The plans for the small office building on the lot between the LaGrange & TD Bank were scrapped a while ago too, even though they had architect drawing & everything. Apparently there was an issue with the building being slightly too tall & they couldn't get a variance or something like that so the owner of the lot scrapped the plans & now they're trying to sell it...It's such a shame. It looked like it was going to be a nice building...

ITA & will definitely keep you posted. The woman that works for me is VERY involved in the town & all of the committees & associations so I get all of my info from her. I usually question her about all of the local developments a few times a month lol

I had no idea they were even considering another commercial building for that piece of land! Yeesh! Chat Icon

Since you're in the know, so to speak Chat Icon

What's the deal with that empty piece of land next to BOA across from the traffic light where the pizza place, florist and deli once were before it mysteriously burned down?

lol You know, she told me about that piece of land a while ago & I can't remember? Argh. I'll ask her again Chat Icon

Jenn, do you remember when that burned down? Were we still in high school? (btw, it's Melissa - of "Melissa & Joe" - just in case you forgot that I'm "jam" lol)

Oddly, that particular piece of land just irritates me! I think because I'd heard that it was an insurance scam and so to see that land just sitting there looking as horrible as it is just pisses me off.

And YES I totally knew that was you!!! Chat Icon

And yeah, I remember when that place burned down; that's when I heard it was an "inside job" and for insurance money.

Of course that was a long time ago and we were much younger so who knows if I heard it right or if that really turned out to be the case. It certainly sounded much more exciting than an accidental fire! Chat Icon

I know that the chef from O's in St. James is opening a restaurant in West Islip soon. He is French and O's is a Tapas place.

OK - some updates :)

It was heard at a local meeting today that the Parkwood IS becoming a French restaurant like a pp mentioned. I'm guessing the Tapas rumor started because of the info the poster above mentioned Chat Icon

There are rumors that Pace is about to start building on the empty lot that's between the LaGrange & TD Bank, but it's not know what it will be yet...

The lot at the end of Higbie (on Montauk) is apparently stuck in the middle of a family estate battle, as I thought it was. It's been going on for YEARS & so far as anyone knows, isn't about to be resolved...

How funny that Parkwood is going to be a French restaurant - that's exactly what it was about 25 years ago.

I am just north of Union over by Best Yet. I have to go to the village twice a week and I didnt notice the change until last week. It must have been a really quick turn around.

I am also curious about the vacant lot across from Sallys bike shop. That whole little shopping center next to it (Bike Bar & Liquor store) is such a eye sore to the area...
