I have 2 of these in my house - one in the kitchen and one in the livingroo. Does anyone know what this is for? I can't figure it out!

They might be dryer outlets. They usually have to be on a dedicated electric line and there are quite a few different configurations.

In general, I have seen those for technology that draws a LOT of power. In my computer center, they were huge AC units and uninterruptible power supplies.

If it's in your kitchen, perhaps it's where a refrigerator used to be. It's the only thing I could think of that would need that kind of power.

eta - you're probably right, an old dryer might use it too

that is what it is, an older electric dryer. I think we have one in our laundry too too. We just left it.

Looks like a 20amp, 220volt outlet. Used for bigger appliances like big A/C units, dryers, stoves, etc.
