Anyone know what the lifetime of a Medela PISA motor is?

I bought a Medela PISA back in 2007 and used it a lot for my DD over the course of the year I BF

Then I used it again for a year with my DS in 2009

Then my SIL borrowed it for what *I thought* would be a year..and she is still using it 1.5+ yrs later..I know we didn't agree/set on a timeline for her when she borrowed it but I was guessing it would be around the year mark! She told me she was planning on giving it back to me late summer/early fall! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Now that I am expecting DC#3 - I am due 12/31! I plan on using it for a full year!

I am worried..before MY time is up the motor is going to konk out on me! Almost 5 years seems to be asking a lot of a small little motor..

I am looking on the medela website.but cant seem to find the info....

does anyone know the lifetime expectency of their motors!?!?!

TIA

The problem with the pumps is that the break down slowly. So, it could technically work and you could think that it is fine but really you are not getting the full amount of milk that you COULD be getting and it may ruin your supply.

I used my PISA for a year of almost only pumping and I plan on getting a new one for the next baby and keeping this one at work.

I don't know, but it's definitely a long time. I have the PIS one (backpack style). I bought it in January 2004 and I just finished using it for the 3rd child in 2011. I pumped for a year with the first one in 2004, in 2006 it was for 6 months and now in 2011 it was for 7 months. Soooo happy mine worked/lasted for so long. Even with sitting for years in between! Definitely got my money's worth! Chat Icon

Re: Anyone know what the lifetime of a Medela PISA motor is?

When the high-end personal pumps came on the market, about 15 years ago, we saw quite a few women loosing their milk supply after purchasing a used breast pump. Lactation consultants theorized that those pumps must have been near the end of their life span. All electric motors have a specific life span. A single-user breast pump motor’s life expectancy is rated at about 1000 – 2000 hours. The old rental units, like the SMB and Classic, were rated at 25-30 years!

Manufacturers only guarantee a personal pump for one year. If you buy a used one, even if it is only 6 months old, you cannot get warranty service. In fact, some of the companies will not sell a new collection kit to someone who purchased a used pump. An older pump may not cycle as well, or produce the same level of suction as it did when it was new. Electric motors, like these, tend to die slowly, over a period of weeks, or months. A mom who has no experience with how the pump should work, may not notice the pump isn’t working properly until her supply is suffering.
