Anyone looking to go apple picking in the near future-some info
1st bit of advice- Avoid Lewin's farm for apple picking, they have nothing left.
2nd bit of advice- Avoid out east on a Saturday or Sunday, OR be prepared to sit in the worst traffic on all the roads. If you could go on a weekday, we assume the traffic is not as bad.
We went to Lewin farms today. to begin with, you cannot apple pick at their main address(which there website does not tell you). After a long wait to actually get a spot, and then walk from far down the road into their main building, we were told by a small sign that apple & peach picking was located more then a mile away. When we arrived at the actual orchard, they want $4 for a bucket to just put you apples in, or 5 cents for a plastic bag. we bought the bucket, and should have never wasted our money. I believe the apples once picked were $1 a pound.
All of the apples were on the ground, the bees were HORRIBLE!! and the few apples that were left on the tree, well they were left there for a reason. You don't want them. After almost an hour of trying to find a single edible apple, we gave up and left. A lot of people have picked them and brought a ton of trash into the orchard and just left it on the ground, it was really bad.
IMO it wasn't worth it.
We went to another place a few years ago where you had to take a hay ride to get to the orchards, and all the rows of apples were nicely labeled, I don't remember many apples on the ground rotting attracting bees, or garbage every where, it was very nice. We couldn't remember the name of it or the place and had no luck finding it again.
Just an FYI from what I learned today

ITA! We live out on the North Fork and I will not go out on the weekends- and if I have to I take the less known back roads, that don't have any major farms on them. Traffic seriously is worse this time of year than it is in the summer.

we have gone there the past couple years. The first time was OK, the last time eh.
This year we drove to Warwick NY and went to Masker's Orchard. It was AMAZING!!! What a difference. I dont think we'll ever go apple picking on LI again.
It was huge and PLENTY of apples.
here are a couple pics from last week

Ugh, that stinks! Every weekend I want to go out and then I think of how crowded it must be! At least you got to spend the day with your DH!
