Re: anyone need to gain weight? update
OMG, I am so sorry to hear this. A lot of people forget that when the blood sugar is very high, you can lose weight quickly. My husband has type 1 diabetes and he lost 25lbs in two weeks when he first got sick.

Re: anyone need to gain weight? update
Not great news, but at least you have answers. I am borderline right now.
My best advice is to find a nutritionist you love ---- someone you can email/call at any time and start learning how to eat to keep your sugars at bay.
I am currently dealing with pregnancy diabetes (and did on my last pregnancy too), so I have a lot of information/advice if you need.
My biggest piece of advice is ---- 6 meals a day. Breakfast, Snack, Lunch, Snack, Dinner, Snack .... small meals every few hours, so that you don't get too low in between or overeat and soar too high. You want your body to constantly be working on processing complex carbs & protiens to keep your sugar level even. Eat protien with every single meal & snack ---- almonds, cashews, peanut butter, almond butter, lean meats .... stay away from 'low fat foods' - they are loaded with extra sugars. For example, regular Jiff Peanut Butter has 7g carbs. They reduced fat version has 14g carbs!
You will quickly learn the carb count of every single food you eat and once you do, it does get easier to eat on the go. Another good indicator for sugar rising is the Glycemic Index of foods --- you can buy a book or look it up online. But not all foods/sugars are created equal .... an apple versus a pineapple will have very different reactions in your body because of the glycemic index. It's definitely worth looking into.
Find a nutritionist (I have a recommendation if you need - she is located in Sayville I think). She does email consulting as well as in person visits. They will really help you figure out your personal needs.
Diabetes is frustrating because one day you can have great numbers and the next day eat the same thing and your numbers are thrown off. Also each person processes every food different, so what works for one may not work for the other.
Also, sickness greatly affects your glucose number .... rule out that it's not sickness (virus) that is throwing you out of wack ....
Good luck and FM me if you need info.

Re: anyone need to gain weight? update
thanks everyone
I was in the hospital for 4 days- I am feeling alot better now
I am getting used to all this- it's a lot to take in- but I am thankful for the answer
I am up about 10lbs- mostly fuilds I think- I look puffy- but it's something
I am back at work today- trying to get used to what I should eat and when
It's easier being at work then being at home-
I need to eat more protien- but every day is a learning experince and I can make adjustments for the next day

Great to hear from you Beth. I've been thinking about you. I'm glad you are home and doing better. Take it one day at a time.

Re: anyone need to gain weight? update
This happened to me. I was physically really sick and told by the cariologist I had to "be more liberal" with my diet.
It's tough, but really you need to find the right foods to give you the maximum health benefits. Especially when you have trained yourself to eat a certain way.
Just remember (which I'm sure you do ) to keep it healthy. Add cheese, low-fat yogurt instead of fat free, lots of protein in the form of beans, keep your iron up.
People don't realize it is not as simple as eating cake and cookies. You don't want to do that at all. Though, it is fun to add chocolate daily to your diet.
Good luck. I know it's difficult. and frightening.
ETS: I just saw your diagnosis. I'm sorry to hear that.

I am so glad you went to the doctor and were able to get an answer. Hopefully with insulin you will be able to get the diabetes under control. A few visits with a nutritionist may be helpful. I hope you strat feeling better soon!
I'm also glad that you went to your doctor and got an answer. I was living with diabetes for quite a while before I lost the weight (and got taken off of my meds) but it can be managable.
I also think a nutritionist would be a good idea for you and helpful.
I also hope that you're feeling better.
