Anyone not doing a big first birthday?
My ds's 1st bday is December 27th. My house is not big enough to fit the whole fam (besides the fact that both dh and my parents are divorced, dad's both remarried) and we spent for his christening. I was thinking of having just cake (on three separate nights to accommodate everyone)...but then thought maybe christmas night??? Would you be upset if someone planned a cake for christmas night? (everyone lives within 20 minutes of our house)
Sorry so long...our family situation is always complicated.

Re: Anyone not doing a big first birthday?
I'm not sure yet, I have 6 months, but I would love to have everyone here, I think it would be cramped. I was thinking of having the 2 parties, but then I want all of the families together at once. I don't know. I just think between my shower, the Christening, it's too much.
I wish she was a summer baby , to do a BBQ. We shall see!

Re: Anyone not doing a big first birthday?
I would NOT be upset if a cake was planned for Christmas evening.
And we are NOT doing anything big for her 1st....we dont have the time, $$, or room for it. I figure we'll send an invite to immediate family in NY, if people want to come down, their choice.
We'll probably have a couple of trays of italian food and cake at the house for the family we have here and those we feel close to (my boss who lets me bring her everyday and our friends who watch her every Sat and keep her on the occasional overnight).

Re: Anyone not doing a big first birthday?
I know people that rent halls and have DJ's etc. I personnally think it's too much but then again if I had the money to spend maybe I would feel different. My friends are all starting these 1st B'Day parties and I still have fove months to think about it. Although people start planning at 7 or 8 months. DS B'Day is Feb. 19th and honestly I don't know where we'll be. Currently we are at least 1 hour from everyone so we won't be able to do anything on his birthday unless we go to people which upsets me. I would do a small party with close family and friends. Iwon't be inviting extended family and every friend. I'm think a cake and two pans of food. Presents and a happy kid.....
Do what makes you happy. If someone in our family had a cake on Christmas for their kid it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I think it would be great - more desert. I'd request two presents though - just kidding.

We are not doing anything big because of space and money. We didn't with our first either.

Re: Anyone not doing a big first birthday?
In NY standards what we had wasn't anything too big. It was a house party in the backyard with the food inside. We borrowed a bouncy house from a friend. I did hire Music Together so that the kids would be occupied for a while and the parents could catch a break. We ended up renting a tent and heater but that was last minute because it was going to be pretty cold the day of her party and trying to have 40 adults and 20 kids inside would have been insane. I got appetizers from Costco and food from Panda Express. I made the favors myself. The cake was from the local grocery store. To people here in CO it was a big to do because out here they don't do anything. We haven't been to one 1st birthday. Honestly if we hadn't moved into our new house we probably would have kept it smaller than what it was but it was an opportunity to have everyone over to see the new place so we had a pretty big guest list.
