Anyone not getting a bedding set?
I keep hearing horror stories about bumpers and blankets in cribs. I was just planning on getting breathable bumpers, and a cute diaper stacker, hamper and lamp. Anyone else doing something similar?

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
My friend did that, just registered for a few sheets and cute accessories. I considered doing the same for all your reasons but then feel in love with a bedding set

As a BTDT mom - I wish I would have saved $$$ and not gotten the bedding "set." I have not used the comforter ONCE. Not once! The only things you need are sheets, a breathable bumper and a bed - skirt though keep in mind some cribs don't even need that because you can't see the bottom where the mattress is. So much easier to just register for those individual pieces IMO.

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
i agree, i don't think you need a set.
i mean, there's something very exciting and traditional about buying a bedding "set" for your baby.
but in reality...
-you don't use the blanket cause of SIDS -you may not want to use the bumper cause of SIDS
so what you're left with is the sheet.
i think you're better off going with all of the accessories from the bedding set you like (lamp, trash can, etc).

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
Here's what I used of the bedding:
ummmmmmmmm.... oh yeah....
THE BUMPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's it... nothing else.... yes, the sheet too, but that's it.
The quilt is for nothing... I don't even know why they bother selling it.
And yes, I still use the bumper, have NEVER once taken it out....
She is all over the place, and likes to bounce all over her crib, and throws herself around.... If I didn't have the bumper in her crib, she would be banging her head alllllllllllll over the place....

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
I love my bedding set. We have the skirt, sheet and bumper on crib. When DD was really little she never moved so we had bumper. Then she starting rolling around and we removed it. Now she can sit up and pull herself up in crib, so we have no worries that she would sufficate in a bumper - only worries that she'd bump her head on the railing, so we have the bumper in again. SIDS is only the first year, most likely your baby will be in crib for 2 years, maybe a little longer so you may want the bumper then.

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
we're not. we are going to register for a bumper, and then just sheets. I feel like the quilt/comforter is a waste, unless youre going to hang it on the wall. i cant see spending $150-250 on a bedding set! plus this way, we can get LOTS of different sheets, mix it up

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
I also wanted a set, but we're probably not going to get a crib at first b/c we live in a 2Bd townhouse and the bedrooms are on seperate floors, I wouldn't want to make the baby's nursery on a seperate floor, so at first we'll have the baby in our room, until it sleeps through the night, and then hopefully we'll move to a bigger house.

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
I did not get a set for DD....My aunt made me bumpers, a diaper stacker and my grandma made a quilt.
I took the bumpers out once she rolled over and got breathable ones...i rarely use the diaper stacker and the quilt has never been used but i love it anyway because my grandma her granny made it (my brothers and I still have ours that she made when we were born )

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
We're just doing fitted sheets and decorative accessories for the room. We'll be getting some pillows and a blanket in a pattern I fell in love with, but they'll be for decor, not for the actual crib. I think one of the biggest surprises to me when registering was how little of a complete bedding set actually goes in the crib!

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
Question re: breathable bumpers.
I thought bumpers were supposed to protect the baby from banging their heads against the crib. I realize that the bumper is not good for a baby, but I am also wondering if breathable bumpers protect the baby too. I have never seen one in person, so I am trying to understand the point.
Obviously, I am pregnant with my first.

breathable bumpers help from babies kicking their arms/legs out of the crib and getting twisted and stuck....

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
I did not get a bedding set when i had my 1st (she is 8m now) and i am SOOO glad i did not.
For one, my baby didnt even sleep in the crib until about 4-5 months of age.
I kept bumpers out because she would roll her face into them and that bothered me
the blankets that come with crib sets are large. I used a smaller blanket, my daughter NEVER pulled any blanket over her head, not EVER!. She would always throw them off. However i have heard a story from my friend where her daughter pulled the blanket over her head and then cried because she couldnt get it off- luckily mom woke up.
Sheets get dirty, spit up, or just sucking on them, or with whatever, so i used a sheet cover and washed that instead of the sheets all the time. Basically i used the SAME thing that you lay on in the hospital post partum, its like a square thing that is somewhat thick and waterproof. I got those things and just kep them on the sheet and washed them.
So, lets seen aside from the sheet i would have had no use for the full sheet set
Today i use sheet and bumper - i just have two purple sheets and 1 purple bumper
I use the bumper now because she crawls and gets up so she often falls down and the bumper cushions her fall.
So overall i would say a crib set is for YOU, not for the baby.
i would postpone it and get it later when the baby is older and appreciates it more and you have more of a room for her.

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
i got all the accessories for the set, breathable bumpers, crib skirt and sheets. the decorative bumper and quilt are a waste of $ and really shouldn't be used anyway.

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
We're just going with the basics. Even though the bedding sets are soo cute, most of the stuff you can't use. We're getting the breathable bumpers and some sheets.

Re: Anyone not getting a bedding set?
Oh No! I fell in love with Eileens Custom bedding (She's a vendor on here). It's all I could think about since I found out I was pregnant.
Maybe I can ask her to customize our bedding set so I don't have extra pieces.
Thanks for all of the insight (as usual)...I'd never even heard of a breathable bumper!
