Re: Anyone not going to have an epidural? The whole idea really scares me
I loved my epideral! I am afraid of needles but after having contractions I didn't care and wanted the relief. The drug doesn't mess with your head and I felt like I had just had a great massage. I do still have some pain at the injection site after 4 1/2 months but am planning on doing it again next time. I'm amazed that women actually do it without pain meds.

I have a question - Does anyone know the effects of the epidural on the baby?

Re: Anyone not going to have an epidural? The whole idea really scares me
This was one of my biggest fears. I hate anything on my back or touching my back. Thank God I had a wonderful anethesiologist. I didn't feel the needle at all. I will tell you that I had a migraine and threw up for 2 hours after they removed it. I still ocassionally get back pain at the site 7.5 mos later. That all being said I don't regret it in the least. BTW I was induced and once they start turning up Pitocin the contractions are insane. Next time if I am not induced we'll see what happens.....

I think the biggest worry is that it can cause the fetal heart-rate to drop, which is why you'll have to have continous fetal monitoring if you get one (you can have intermittent monitoring otherwise, which gives you greater freedom of movement). I have read differing opinions, but most agree that the drugs do cross the placenta, but it's not clear what effect that has on the baby.

Re: Anyone not going to have an epidural? The whole idea really scares me
I was scared too and honestly compared to the contractions, getting the epi was a piece of cake. I was always able to feel my legs and was walking 10mins after my son was born. Each person is different and you just have to go with your gut and determine what is best for you and your child. Good Luck

Re: Anyone not going to have an epidural? The whole idea really scares me
I don't want to have one but I'm not ruling it out completely. My mom had all 5 of her children (4 pregnancies) fairly quickly w/o meds so I'm hoping that I'll labor like she did. It's a wait and see thing for me.

I am going to try not to get one. If there was one thing I learned during pregnancy, it is that things do not always go as planned.
So, as of now, the plan is to NOT get one.

Re: Anyone not going to have an epidural? The whole idea really scares me
Oh I so did not plan on getting one, I was open to it, but set on going natural, I was dealing with the intense pain of contractions coming every 3-4 minutes, but at the hospital the nurse MADE me lie in bed which made my contractions 1000x worse. Right after they made me lie down, I said why be a hero, be comfy and I got the epi at 4cm’s. SOOOoooo worth it! I was able to rest, talk to people, I didn’t feel a thing. I got feeling back in my legs within 10 min of them shutting it off.
I too was scared of the whole needle in your back thing, but honestly, you wont care when you are so much pain and they numb your back before they insert the needle, so you don’t even feel it, only a burning sensation. The hardest part is keeping completely still while having contractions, but the nurse helps you through it.
With DD, her heartrate was fine, never dropped at all, and I was pushing for 2.5 hours, her head wouldn’t fit out! I did need pitocin though cause once I got the epi my contraction slowed down and become irregular.
Just be open to anything, you never know, labor is extremely unpredictable and you never know how you’ll feel until you are in pain and labor.

Re: Anyone not going to have an epidural? The whole idea really scares me
I'm torn with that decision. I was so sure that i wanted to get as soon as i arrrive at the hospital, however now i'm having second thoughts. I heard that one of the side effects is back pain which can last forever. I just hope and pray that i will have a quick labor where i won't need it. I 'll be eating lots of pineapple (which i hear helps labor) and lots of spicy foods.

Re: Anyone not going to have an epidural? The whole idea really scares me
I took the wait and see approach, and 2 hours after starting Pitocin (I was induced) I got my epi. From then on it was actually a pleasant experience, waiting in anticipation w/DH, monitoring the intensity of contrx and my progress and not moaning and groaning like I was beforehand> I did have really bad back labor though and they say that is worse than regular labor. It literally took my breath away and I couldn't NOT focus on it. But once I got my epi all was well! Oh - and I have no side effects or pain or anything 2 months later.

Re: Anyone not going to have an epidural? The whole idea really scares me
Unless I am "too far gone", I think I will get one. Not flaming or anything, but I've had a couple of surgeries and needles aren't as scary as people think they are.
If my labors are anything like my mom's, I will be too far gone. My sister was born in 45 minutes, start to finish and still in the bag of waters!

Re: Anyone not going to have an epidural? The whole idea really scares me
I went in with a "maybe I'll get one, maybe not" attitude, depending on how I was feeling. I wanted to go natural but not if I was in a lot of pain.
I did hypnobirthing which I highly recommend, but I DID wind up asking for an epidural (after 40 hours of labor!!)
Believe me, I wasn't worried about the needle at that point. It didn't hurt, and it felt great. I was still able to feel and move my legs - it just took away the pain. I was up walking shortly after giving birth.

I have an issue with the idea of having a needle stuck in my spine and than not being able to feel or move my legs. But some of my friends have said the epidural didnt even work for them. Than a couple of weeks ago I read this article on Yahoo that totally solidified my fears.
http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?StoryID=20061017-102704-7987r
You CAN feel and move your legs...it does NOT numb everything. The pain of the needle is NOT that bad....I would rather have that short stab in the back than to feel those contractions

Re: Anyone not going to have an epidural? The whole idea really scares me
I was totally against having a epidural and went to hypnobirthing classes. I labored at home from 7pm. I arrived at the hospital at 8am and had my son at 1:25pm. I had terrible back labor and tried to go without having one. I got an epidural an hour before delivering my son. I felt a slight twinge in my right butt cheek so I knew I was contracting. It did not hurt at all going in. I will still try to go drug free if I can next time but you really can't say how you will feel until you are experiencing it. My back labor really hurt!

Re: Anyone not going to have an epidural? The whole idea really scares me
I had my 1 with an epidural and 1 without and I WILL NOT be taking the epidural for the 3rd baby!! My daughter was sooo much more alert and my recovery was sooo much better without the epidural.... Women have given birth for thousands of years without epidurals... it's not an impossible thing to do, it's something your body is made to do. And to me it isn't worth taking the risk of any complications from the epidural. I found that reading a Hypnobirthing book helped alot.

Re: Anyone not going to have an epidural? The whole idea really scares me
I am torn. I get knocked out for dental work because I am a chicken, but this is way different. If I have a vaginal birth, I will try to go natural. Although I LOVE my Ob, I am thinking of finding a midwife. I am not into medicine so much, but having never given birth I don't think I can honestly say exactly how I will react, or if I will be able to handle it. I have a pretty high threshold for pain, but I have never experienced labor pains, so who knows?

If you really want to go natural definitely switch to a midwife or an OB who is familiar with natural childbirth -- natural birth really is different than medicated birth and having a practitioner that understands natural childbirth can make all the difference. I switched to Stony Brook Midwives and I love them.
