Anyone notice the increase of babies diagnosed with reflux?
It's insane, no?
I remember when I had DC#1, it was almost unheard of (within my family and group of friends). Sure, there were some babies with colic, but you hardly ever heard of babies with reflux.
Anyone else notice the same?
Anyone know what the cause may be?

i think it's the same thing as with anything else....
over time things that were misdiagnosed are being diagnosed properly now.
what i'm saying is that maybe a lot of children that were diagnosed as having colic were actually suffering from reflux.
kwim?

You may be absolutely right!
I just feel so bad for those poor babies with that reflux though.

I wonder the same thing when it comes to food allergies. Growing up no one had food allergies now it's all you here about.

I read a great article in time magazine that basically said the increase in food allergies right now is being thought to be caused by over use of Antibacterial items. We killed all the germs and we aren't being subject to the right kind anymore and our bodies aren't building antibodies against allergens. hence food allergies.
But i do think the increase of reflux diagnoses is finally diagnosed correctly.
I do believe time ago, if the doc couldn't figure out what was wrong it was blamed on Colic.
Babies with reflux grow out it just like colicky babies, right around the same ages.

True! And after DS was diagnosed with asmtha and I was doing research on allergens and triggers (because I was so worried he was allergic to the dog and cat and they were setting him off), I read that children exposed to dogs an cats at an early age actually have less allergies because they are exposed to germs and stuff from them while they are developing and build a defense to them.

That same article also said there is group of researchers in a highly controlled environment that is giving patients with severe allergies a little tiny tiny bit of it in a shot so their bodies can slowly build up antibodies to it, instead of histamines. they talked about a case about a boy with a severe peanut allergy that was given at first microscopic peanut dust on his skin, then injected and little by little they upped the amount. now he can eat a 1/2 peanut without going into anaphylatic shock. I think that's GREAT improvement and maybe they are def onto something down the road.
It was very interesting read, especially since i have food allergies myself and I'm sooo scared i passed something onto my girls.
oh yeah, i also passed acid reflux onto them too.

Re: Anyone notice the increase of babies diagnosed with reflux?
Recently I read (though I can't remember where) that reflux is being overdiagnosed, and many babies do not have true reflux problems or need medication. All babies have some degree of reflux, and the article basically said that some doctors are too quick to prescribe medication rather than trying different formulas or other techniques to improve the baby. I'm not saying that many parents on here have no reflux issues, just repeating what I read.
I do think some of it is also due to more awareness of the problem. I also think this is the case with autisum, and many kids today with milder forms of it would have just been considered different kids not that long ago.

I agree with this! Dr's are way to fast to hand out antibiotics these days and parents are way to fast to give them to their kids which is why we have so many antibiotic resistant virus' and diseases now.

Re: Anyone notice the increase of babies diagnosed with reflux?
I tend to think it's being overdiagnosed like other's have said. Spit up is normal, but I think a lot of people panic about it. DD is a spitter, but doesn't cry and is not uncomfy after eating.
