anyone online right now... UPDATE ON JEDI

Okay as most of you know, we brought Jedi home on saturday. We've been trying to crate train him and NOTHING is working. I get that it's hard... but seriously... how long do they usually cry for??? He's been crying for 3 hours STRAIGHT!!! How can this be normal? And how does anyone do this for any length of time???

I just don't get it. We've tried everything. We put the kong in the crate, we put in a special treat and he just wants nothing to do with them. I even put the crate by the bed and that didn't work. I laid there with my finger in the crate... nothing!

How long did your puppy cry for???

Re: anyone online right now... need help!

Sadly- it may just take awhile until he gets used to it. DON'T take him into bed with you (unless you're planning to make that a permanent thing). I'm assuming he's likely missing his littermates/momma. Have you tried a warm hot water bottle and the old ticking clock (although that might drive me batty).

Don't worry- he WILL get used to it eventually. Crating him is the best way to housebreak- I swear.....

Re: anyone online right now... need help!

Each dog is different. Pyxie did not cry but she cratched the hell out of the crate. Loki actually ate his way out of it, while Bruno & Frank just accepted it.

The only thing that worked in the end was the ticking clock....it simulates the mother dog's heart beat & acts as a comfort tool for the pup to get used to being alone & in a new place. They also make an item especially for dogs called "comfort beats," I think. It is a stuffed animal of a momma dog with the ticking mechanism in it.

I agree with MrsMBV...I think I wrote it in your first post. An old fashioned ticking alarm clock can work wonders.
But, it's going to take some time. Your puppy is used to being with other puppies and it's mommy all the time, now it's alone so there is going to be some adjustments.
Hang in there, it will get better.

I'm starting to seriously wonder if it will. I was ready to cry last night it was so bad. I just feel like we've tried everything and we sat there going "this can't be normal! This is torture!" (for him and us).

It gets worse before it gets better. I know that is not what you want to hear, but the cries are a bit of desparation for the pup. He is in an unfamiliar place, with new people & none of his puppy siblings or parents. He is scared & this is how he is expressing it. It will get better once he feels safeChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: anyone online right now... need help!

the first two weeks I went into work like a zombie because Boogie was crying and crying...I wanted nothing but to take him out and let him be, but I knew it would be bad...he "got over it" and realized it wasn't so bad in two weeks...

they have this stuffed animal for dogs that you heat up the inside and stick it back in the stuffed part and that worked...along with the radiio playing lightly, although a clock is a great idea too! I would put a treat in there with him... BUT don't give him a treat when he is crying

good luck! IT DOES get better and it's so worth it in the end!Chat Icon

yeah we're going to try the clock thing tonight. We've done the whole treat thing and he could care less. We've done the whole putting on the tv, sound machine, etc... and nothing!

My question is... everyone is telling us different things. Like whenever we leave the house or need to do something... put him in the crate. So when we take a shower, we put him in the crate?

Then everyone says don't take him out if he's crying. Well if we're only taking a 10 minute shower and he'll cry for at least an hour in there... we're supposed to just leave him in???? Chat Icon

here's what I used to do...
when we would leave for short trips- (even pretend if you dont really have to go somewhere) we would put him in the crate...praise him and give him a treat...leave right away, don't make a big deal about it... IF he is still crying when you come home, I would go to the crate, tell him to stop crying- most of the time he will stop even if it is just a second or so- right away open the crate and give him a treat-

Some people might crate during shower time, I never did, I just put him in the bathroom with me.. or DH would be around with him in the AM...

Re: anyone online right now... need help!

I know it is frustrating.. But hang in there… Yes don't take him out of the crate when he is crying… if you take a shower for 10 minutes and he is still crying talk to him in the baby voice… until he stops… Stick your figure in the crate and pet him until he stops than take him out… He has to learn the crate is a good happy place for him.. Treats, toys, blankets.. All the things that make him feel secure. If you take him out when he is crying than he will learn that when he cries he can get out of this horrible place. One trainer told me that it is worse on us the humans than the dogs when they cry in the crate… so remember if he cries for two hours in there than so be it.. Leave go in another room and shut the door, put on some music and distract yourself. What happens is people give up way too fast on the crate. We went through the same thing with the crate (though putting the crate by the bed on a chair next to me with my figure in the crate did work for me). But now Rudy goes in his crate just because.. He views it as a safe warm place.. Not the horrible place where he cried for hours on end when he was a puppy.

yup , take him out and go about your day...

I would always keep the crate opened...keep his blanket and toys and treats in there so that he feels comfy going in by himself... IF you see him go in by himself PRAISE him like a lunatic and give him a treat...

You have those soft training treats??? since you are literally going to be treating him all the time during the puppy stage these are good to get

Re: anyone online right now... need help!

When Luna would be crying- I'd go in the room and talk softly to her. Usually, she'd stop whining long enough for me to take her out without her associating the crying with "out". Also, if she is in the crate and we came home- FIRST THING was to take her out- no waiting.

Also, never use the crate as punishment (for example, if you catch her chewing a shoe, don't yell and put her in the crate)- she should always think of her crate as her den.

We would lug the damned thing up and down the stairs every day so that she could go in and out of it while we were there.

I promise- it will get better!!!

see i've been told by various people that you shouldn't talk to the puppy when he's crying because that will reinforce the crying. I keep hearing contradicting advice. Chat Icon

Okay so we bought a gate and put it up so that we could put JEdi in the bathroom. We put his crate, his water/food, toys, etc in there, along with him of course. Chat Icon He cried for about 30 minutes and then i found him asleep in his crate. That's a good sign right? Chat Icon (although we were suprised that he'd cry that much at all since he wasn't locked in the crate). But i'll take it...

This doesn't pertain to when she's in the crate and you want her to stay there, but a good way to get her (or him) to stop crying before you take her out of the crate is what I did:

Start about 10 steps back and walk slowly one step at a time...every step that she gets excited or cries for you to come open the door, you take one step back. Everytime you move forward and she makes a noise, do it all over again..eventually you'll get to the crate and as soon as you hit the bar to open it, she'll probably make a noise or get excited, then back off...this will train the dog to be quiet in the crate and will hopefully help when she's in there for long periods....

We also would turn our back to the crate sometimes when doing this to show that we couldn't hear and weren't bothered by it.

This will take a few tries, but should eventually work...we don't leave her in the crate anymore but when we did she was an angel.

Re: anyone online right now... UPDATE ON JEDI

Well...

i got a good nights sleep last night! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Usually Jedi will watch a little tv with us at night on the couch and of course, he ends up napping. So last night we didn't let that happen seeing how he was going to bed shortly after. So we took him outside and then i moved the crate from downstairs upstairs into our bedroom and prepared it! I put the frozen shank bone in it (that someone recommended to me) and when he went into the crate himself, we praised him left and right.

Then he began to cry a little and the little demon only came out once for a short period of time. It was probably only about 20 minutes of whimpering before HE and WE fell asleep! Then he woke us up twice in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, which we were very excited about that. (before we'd wake ourselves up and take him thinking he might have to go). And when we put him back in the crate, he'd whimper for about 2 minutes and that was it.

Have you tried covering the crate with a blanket? This may help with helping to stop the crying.
