Anyone planning to get a c-section when it's not medically necessary?
I'm terrified of giving birth. I know it isn't recommended but I'm considering getting a c-section. Delivery is a long time away for me. Just started thinking about it...

Re: Anyone planning to get a c-section when it's not medically necessary?
My c-section could have been "viewed" as unnessecary.
Although I would have been in a REALLY BAD SHAPE if I had not had a c-section.
Both OB told me I qualified for one though.
It needs to be "qualifying" in order for your insurance to cover the expense. It's more expensive that a vaginal delivery.

Nope. Had I not had a complete previa I would have done everything in my power to go natural. Luckily for me, my Dr is open to a VBAC with this baby!

No way. I'm the exact opposite. I pray I can go vaginally. I do not want a c-section. Its major surgery.

Sorry! I had a placenta or complete previa, which means that my Placenta completely covered my cervix. Since the baby has to come out first, I had to have a c-section.

So you would get a c-section and vaginal birth at the same time? That sounds like double trauma to the body!

NO WAY..... I went through minor suregery once and it was horrific!!! I am very sensitive to anesthesia and I am allergic to most common prescription pain killers.
I am trying my hardest to go vaginally and naturally. I would HATE to have to deal with recovering from major suregery and those potential side effects as well as taking care of a newborn and post partum hormones

No, her doc is ok doing a vaginal delivery w/baby #2 even though baby #1 was delivered via c-section. Most docs do a c-section for baby #2 if baby #1 was c-section.

VBAC means previous c-section with another child and then trying vaginally with another child. THey aren't both done at once, although you could labor and have to get a c-section.
Everytime you have a c-section and your uterus is cut it becomes weaker and more susceptible to uterine rupture as well as other complications from teh previous incision and scar tissue.

I had a c-section with my 1st and it was not medically necessary but when I went into labor, DS ws still vey high and they estimated him to be a very big baby they were afraid of him getting stuck.

Some Drs feel, and in some cases it is true, that a previous c-section makes someone a higher risk for a natural birth for their subsequent pregnancies. There are things that they can monitor throughout the pregnancy to see if there are conditions present to warrant another c-section. Not all Drs are willing to do VBACs though, which I why I was so excited that she is willing to wait and see. I was very very disappointed (I would even say at one point devastated) that I had to have a c-section with G. Although I knew it was the only way to keep him safe & healthy, I still always envisioned a natural birth.

Re: Anyone planning to get a c-section when it's not medically necessary?
I don't think I'd do a c-section voluntarily...there's a lot more risk and the recovery is much harder.
I'm having a c-section, but I'm not thrilled about it--only doing it because it's medically necessary.

This is true, however there are specific medical tests the Drs can do late term to try and determine if the risk for rupture is higher. Apparently there are certain medical conditions (not just a previous incision of the uterus) that raise the risk of rupture.
According to my Dr, at our last chat, the rate for uterine rupture for a VBAC is 2% higher than a first birth. That is without any other pressing medical conditions.

I am going to be honest and say that this is a conversation you need to have with your OB. A LOT of them are not huge fans of just doing a section. Usually, there has to be SOME type of reason (i.e. baby is big, high, etc, etc) to do a section.
Insurance doesn't really want to cover a c-section v. a vaginal birth too. My v-birth was $13k but my BFF's section was $30k
I thought I'd be terrified of giving birth as well, but with the epidural, it really wasn't that bad. I am glad that I was able to have him vaginally (although had a section been medically necessary I would have been on board with that too!)
Don't over-think it. Your body knows what it is doing

You know Im terrified too BUT that does not men Im willing to put myself through unnecessary surgery. It is MAJOR surgery, everyone gets scared. I PERSONALLY think tho get a C-section because you are scared and risk your health is a horrible idea.
MY Opinion.

ITA w/this. C-section is major surgery, to me that's way scarier than delivering vaginally.

Re: Anyone planning to get a c-section when it's not medically necessary?
Whenever I think about labor and delivery, I start getting really stressed out and scared. I've never had surgery but I guess I am thinking I could just wake up and have a baby in my arms instead of going through hours of labor.
DH is a surgeon and is dead set against me getting an unnecessary c-section. He thinks the risks are higher and like other posters have stated, giving birth is something women are made to do.
I know all women tear in labor. The thought of episiotomy sounds even worse. I'm getting upset just thinking about it. Sigh...
All of you other women sound so brave.

Not true at all! As long as the baby is not too big, you can definitely have a v-delivery without tearing!
ETA: Even if you do wind up needing the episiotomy, they'll numb you first so that you don't feel it.

There is no one more scared than me when it comes to labor. I am beyond terified. I am such a wimp when it comes to pain.
However I so hope I can make it through delivery vaginally.

This isn't true. Not all women tear! I did, I had a 2nd degree tear and I will be honest that I have NEVER had any pain from it. AT ALL! I took motrin once in the hospital and that was it!
You really have to not worry yourself about this. This is nature, your body KNOWS what it is supposed to do, even if your mind hasn't caught up yet

It has nothing to do with being brave. If you never had a surgery you are going to opt for your first to be a c section. You need to regroup. Sorry to be harsh. If your own dH a SURGEON is voiceing his thoughts and does NOT want you to get one if it is not medically needed. WHY. Yeah you could tear, yeah you could push for hours and still need a c section, A lot could happen. I think Stressing the negative at this stage of the game is silly. Woman have been giving birth for years, and with todays medical marvels I really think there are other more stressful things to worry about.
Once again JMHO!!!
