they have them in europe & people drive them. I don't think they are good for long highway trips, but around town would be cool.

Yeah, I was going to say, I saw cars like that in Germany. That would be a cool car for jetting around town, but I don't think I'd want to go on a highway with it around trucks and SUV's.

Not really new at all, they have been in Europe for years.

Considering the majority of vehicles are single occupancy on the road a lot more people should be driving smart cars versus SUV's if we ever hope to end our dependency on foreign oil and dependent relationship on mid east oil producing countries. Most Italian families that live in Rome own a Smart car and two scooters to get around.

Not trying to start a debate but it's just an observation...I'll never forget coming back from Italy, stuck in traffic on the Grand Central Pkwy and being surrounded on all sides by huge SUV's all with single occupants for the first time in weeks. I finally "got" how all of the other countries see us. Experiencing that, after being in Europe for weeks, we really do look like such glutons regarding the Earth's resources.

the average american has a carbon footprint twice the size of a European's.
If everyone in the world lived like a wasteful, careless American we'd need SIX Planet Earths to support us all worldwide. How gross is that?

Yeah...it is. Us Americans are all about instant gratification.

Personally, I think another license should be required to drive some of these SUVs that are around. The Ford Expedition? Come on...they're huge!

I would definitely drive a smart car Chat Icon I drive a Toyota Echo, as it is!

Re: Anyone see these new cars that are coming out?

I have the whole huge SUV thing figured out. Car makers need to install a chip in the windsheild(like a built-in easy pass) to all new cars by 2010, gas stations need to install readers by 2010. When someone pulls their gas guzzling hummer/expedition/denali/whatever to the pump the pump charges them 50 cents more a gallon as a "surcharge", those of us that make responsible vehicle choices pay 25 cents less. Everyone in the middle pays regular price.
As the economy tightens the sheeple need to get hit in the pocket.

I agree. I saw them in Europe years ago. My friend in Italy has one. Someone in our building here (I don't live in the US) has one. I would love to get one and DH and I talked about it, but they are expensive here. Everything is expensive here, especially gas.

When you leave the country and you see how wasteful Americans are, you 'get' how other countries see you. But on the other hand Anti-Americanism gets really old. Here, they have a severe inferiority complex to Americans. I get a little tired of it sometimes.

I would like to have a Smart car since the roads are so small and the parking lots and spaces are so small. I don't drive here, maybe if I had a small car I would.

We have them here, they are fantastic. They only take up a really small space, they have a good safety record (from what I believe) and they are super cute, not to mention that the trunk is actually really really big! I sold my high chair on Ebay a few weeks ago and the guy who came to get it drove a Smart Car, it had tons of room in the back.

For me, I prefer to drive a slighly bigger car, so I think the Ford Ka is a better deal, and it comes in a cabrio as well...

I do agree, though, not getting anti-American, because I am completely not...its agree with KlingKlang, coming to live in another country puts into perspective how America is a HUGE consumer nation...however, that being said, many many European countries are following suit. However, I do think smaller cars are the way to go! Even Mercedes does a teensy tiny model these days!

eta...people in the Europe are buying SUV's more and more these days, they are getting to probably about 30% of the cars on the road these days. I must stress that I don't believe, percentage wise, we have higher rates of car accidents than anywhere else in the UK. I find it amazing that everyone thinks the minute you step into a small car you will be killed. Its simply not true.

Re: Anyone see these new cars that are coming out?

there are already some think type cars out here. most people use this as a commuter car to get to train station and do local errands...i use to see them alot.

someone posted about europe has been using small cars for years. you have to remember, gas in europe is complety different over then then here.
they pay an arm and a leg to fill up so driving econmically good cars is the only way to go.

people worldwide don't expect gas to be ever abundant & cheap like it always has been there...Europeans as a whole are just more willing to walk/ride a bike/carpool/take a bus.
Americans think they are too good for that.
In Amsterdam there are 3 story parking garages FILLED with BICYCLES!!!!!

In europe they add so much tax to the price of petrol. I kind of wish they would do that in the US. Use that money to make a better public transportation system or just plain discourage the use of cars so much.
