anyone take a tour of italy?

between my own research and stuff from the travel agent, i'm overwhelmed. so many tours! not sure we are definitely doing a tour. but we (dh and i) are going (if we ever book) in july so perhaps a tour would help out with the price. anyone take a tour? which one? how was it? how was the crowd/transportation/hotels/pace/etc? i don't want to waste time in remote shopping areas or stay at out of the way hotels. help Chat Icon

I've been on a tour with Trafalgar years ago. While the price was phenomenal for what you are able to see, the hotels are really so-so and out of the way.
I have great memories of the tour, and think it's a great way to see the highlights of major cities.

Re: anyone take a tour of italy?

I did a contiki tour with 2 of my girlfriends. It was great!! There's no thinking involved, they just kind of point you in the right directions and your free to do whatever you want. There is no way we would've been able to see so much without going on the tour!

That being said, like a previous poster said, hotels are just okay. Nothing special about them, but some of them were really nice. Most breakfasts were included. And the price was great!! We did the simply italy tour.

I didn't do a tour but I traveled all over Italy with 2 of my girlfriends. We started in Milan and went to Venice, Florence, Piza, Rome, Siena, Pompeii, and Naples. We planned everything out ourselves beforehand and took the train everywhere. It wasn't hard to do and we liked NOT being part of a tour group.

Re: anyone take a tour of italy?

We did Globus, and while it was nice, the restaurants they brought us to were not good at all. Most hotels were good except one, which was awful (in Assisi). But, the tour itself was pretty good, and we went to see a lot of things. We chose it over Perillo because it had more freedom for us to go off on our own. We are not tour people, but did a tour since it was our HM and we did not have time to plan both our wedding AND a HM.

It was 10 days and we saw Rome, Venice, Florence, Assisi, and had some day trips to Sienna, San Geminiano, etc. We had a mix of people on our tour. We were the only honeymooners. There were families mainly and some couples, mainly middle-aged. We had a great time and were glad we did a tour for our first time in Italy.

P.S. But Italy will be HOT in July. We went in June and it was sooooo hot. If I went again, I would either go March or April, or in the fall. So, remember to drink a TON of water each day. We spent so much euros on bottled water.

I agree with the above posts regarding Trafalgar... I've used them a few times to see Europe and I loved the company.

When going to Italy, three places I have to recommend you must see: Rome, Venice, Pompeii.

I can go on and on with other great cities - but these three really stood out for me. Chat Icon

Have a great time!! You'll love it, I'm sure!!

Re: anyone take a tour of italy?

First time I went I did a tour with my sister - we used Globus. It was a good mix of alone time and group activities/tours. REcommend it! Price was reasonable too - but that was abck in 02.

I did this tour by myself in 2000. It was great. Like the above poster said, some of the hotels are so-so but I loved the fact that the tour was with younger ppl instead of a bunch of senior citizens. Contiki caters to 18-35 year olds. There were also a bunch of couples on my tour.
