Anyone take their dog to get their teeth cleaned under light sedation?

My dogs teeth are in desperate need of cleaning. Must be done.

I am worried as they have to lightly sedate them. Anyone have this done? What can I expect? I'm not happy about it but I was a BAD doggie mommy who didn't brush their teeth. I didn't really realize...Chat Icon

my dog gets his teeth cleaned every year, he ate poop as a puppy and has terrible dental hygiene lol
they always do some bloodwork on him first cause he's a little older, and so far it has always come back good
so they sedate him and clean his teeth, i have never had a problem, he always comes home fine

Not sure if they do the same with dental work but when neutering, they take bloodwork beforehand to make sure they are ok to go under anesthesia. Not sure if it's the same with light sedation.

A woman who works in my building was raving about Pet Smart in Levittown, that she had her dog groomed and his teeth cleaned there. Might be something to check out, call them and ask all your questions and see how good they are at answering them.

Good luck!

Re: Anyone take their dog to get their teeth cleaned under light sedation?

We've had it done at PetSmart before (through the Banfield Animal Hospital there). No problems with the sedation, happy with the results.

My smaller dog had an upset stomach for about 24 hours afterwards, which even the vets said was odd since they're only "under" for less than 15 minutes, but she's our puker... it wasn't an unusual reaction for her, and could've been exacerbated by nerves. The other one was fine, acting like his old self right afterwards.

Just FYI (because I didn't know ahead of time, and wished I had so I'd have been prepared), they say to feed them soft foods for a day or so after the cleaning, because their teeth may be sensitive & chewing hard food could hurt a little.
